Mobile Southwest Check-in

I'm thinking about getting a new cell phone. Since it looks like I'll be flying Southwest quite a bit from now on, I want a cell phone that I'll be able to use to check-in. Right now I'm looking at a Motorola RAZR. At the Cingular store they told me the RAZR uses WAP technology. I was on Southwest's website trying to learn more about mobile check-in, and it said:

First, you will need a device with data access functionality and a web browser. Then, you will need to input the following URL/address: mobile.southwest.com. You will probably want to bookmark this address to make it easier to access in the future. If you need assistance on how to create bookmarks on your wireless device, please see your user manual for the device.

Please refer to the user manual for your device, contact your wireless provider, or consult the device manufacturer.

...which didn't answer my questions.

Can anyone give me more information, or if anyone uses a RAZR to check-in, let me know.

I'm not sure what your actual question is. If you are wondering if the mobile check in works, yes it does. I used it on our last trip. If you are wondering how to get the bookmark created within your phones web browser, the user manual should explain it to you. To check it prior to your purchase, try going to the motorola web site and searching for the RAZR user manual. I am getting a RAZR w/in the next couple of weeks so should be able to check it out then.

After visiting two Cingular stores last night and not getting an answer, I started making some calls today.

The end result is that the RAZR, using Cingular's MEdiaNet is capable of an on-line check-in with Southwest. I spoke with someone who just demonstrated it yesterday to someone, so he knew exactly what I was talking about.

It varies by cellular company, but I believe most of them do charge a monthly fee for WAP access. There is no charge to use SWA's mobile check in.

You can buy a monthly plan for MEdiaNet with Cingular, or you can pay as you go. The PAYG rate is $.01 per KB. Since I don't really plan on using the phone as an Internet browser (and I don't want to use it for text messaging, e-mail, and the like), I'll just use the PAYG rate.

I spoke to someone at a Verizon kiosk last week, and they also have a pay as you go plan for Internet access.

I've used the T-Mobile blackberry for web check in with both US Airways and Southwest. It worked well, and both times I was checking luggage so as I did that I was able to get the boarding pass. Granted I did not get the blackerry just for airline check-ins, but I'm paying for it and it does justify my being a crackberry adict every so often.

I got my new phone and set up a bookmark to the Southwest Check-in page, so apparently the MEdia connection does work properly. I'll be able to try it out in a couple of days to learn how to use it.

Now I have to learn how to download ringtones

Trust me, doing the SWA mobile check in is probably going to be much easier than figuring out how to download stuff to your phone
