The plan was to use an ultra mobile notebook PC (Asus Eee) and SDHC cards to back up our CF cards. We took about 14 GB of photos in four days (I know, slackers...) and backed them up to two 8 GB SDHC cards. With Extreme III cards it took about 3 minutes for 2 GB and we could put the backups in our pockets!
It is cost competitive with external hard drives, the three 8 GB SDHC cards cost about $100. It should also be much more reliable than hard drives.
Eee's (or equivalent) can be found for about $300 and since we are DVC we can also use it for airline check-in and email.
