mobile phones again - buying a payg in usa

Does anyone know how much pay as you go phone are to buy in walmart? And how much the calls/texts are between mobiles in america.

We have a group of 40 of us going and want to all buy american mobiles when we get there - it will cost a fortune to use our english ones!!

You can buy TracFones for about $40 in Walmart and with that you get 10 minutes of airtime. The "Rates" section shows how much each additional airtime card costs. I think it sorts of works out - if calling in your registered local area you use up 1 minute of airtime for 1 minute of calling, if calling outside the area or "roaming" you use up 2 minutes of airtime for 1 minute of calling, and for texting it's half a minute of airtime for each text. Something like that anyway - I'll check for you, if you like!!!!

Obviously the cheap phones are nothing fancy, but you can call people and send texts - so that's all you need. The difference with these phones is that minutes are used up by both sending AND receiving calls or texts!

I have a Virgin PAYG cell phone and it's wonderful. If you want to keep the number that you were given when you purchased you HAVE to top up $20 every 90 days - I do this as I don't want to lose my number.

I pay 25c a minute for the frist 10 minutes each day and then 10c a minute after that - and yes this is to make and recieve calls to and from anywhere in the US. There are no peak/non peak times.

Texts are free to receive and 10c to send per text.

I have a US PAYG because I am usually staying in WDW or elsewhere in the US with other Americans and most of them do not have international calling so can't call my UK tri-band or if they can it's really expensive for them.

We won't be able to get walkie talkies because there are so many of us!! We probably won't be in range most of the time.

What happens if i just buy an american sim card and put it in my english mobile phone?? My phone is unlocked to use all networks and it's tri band so i assume it would work?? Where can i buy just the sim card?
