Help...


I have an iPhone 5 on O2 ... I'm away that O2 don't do "bolt ons" for America but am able to still use my phone. Though I have a couple of questions.

1. What does my mobile number become (thinking for ID bracelets)
2. What happens with GPRS

Most places have WiFi so the likes of quick updates to FB I'm not concerned about but the ID bracelet is my primary concern

Whenever I give my mobile number to anybody in the US, I always just do the +44, then drop the 0

Your mobile number would become +447....with the 7 being the start of your mobile phone number (I.e. drop the zero!)

As for GPRS, I'm not quite sure what you mean. It would be billed as per your operators data rate for the US (usually very expensive!) All US cell phone networks are 3G/3.5G/4G anyway. Personally I would deactivate all cellular data services on your phone, turning it into simply a device for texting and calling! You are quite right, wifi is widely available and I would use that in lieu of cellular services to avoid the UK operators high charges!

I don't know about your phone plan, but O2 charges up to £6 per MB of data used when you're in the US

If you download WhatsApp and text other WhatsApp users on it using Wi Fi you can also text for free. I recently discovered this when my colleague went to Florida and needed to keep texting me about work. As a family with 4 i phones this has been a great discovery for us as now we can split up an still keep in contact for free, so long as we have access to the free Wi Fi.

If your phone is unlocked you might want to buy a US Pay and Go SIM for while you're out there.

It's a lot more cost effective than roaming. Also it's cool to have a mobile number that starts 1-407...
