We will be heading out for Hilton Head in about 9 days (Woo-Hoo) and I just picked up my trusty AAA trip-tic for the drive from St. Louis.

They did a round trip one for me showing one way thru Nashville, Knoxville, Asheville and down...the other way shows Nashville, Chattanooga, Atlanta and across. Do any of you know which (if either) is faster? We went via Knoxville and Asheville and it was pretty close to a 16 hour drive (from St. Louis). If the other way is faster that would be helpful to know.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Our 1st trip to HH was the Asheville route on the way down. We sat in traffic for a solid 2 hours of construction -- not moving hardly an inch. That trip it took us 18 hours. Future trips along that route have taken just about 16 hours.

On our 1st trip back, instead of going home, we took the weekend to stop by friends in St. Louis (Kirkwood). We took a route which lead us up to Macon, GA. I don't remember exactly how long it took us to get to St. Louis, but I know that trip through GA up to Macon was a very boring, very flat, very long drive. There was hardly anything along the route. If I were to do it again, I would head toward Asheville and then onto St. Louis.....but that's just my opinion.

Enjoy your trip!

We live in O'Fallon, IL (20 miles outside of STL). HHI is the only DVC resort we have ever driven to. It took us between 11 and 12 hours to complete the trip. We went through Nashville, Chtanooga, then Atlanta. We left at about 5:30 or 6 pm, stopped in Mt. Vernon, IL for dinner, a potty break in Kentucky, then one more stop somewhere in GA. We arrived in HHI around 7 am(ET), had breakfast, checked into the resort (our room was ready!!). Took a little nap, then went swimming!

It wasn't bad at all.
