Okay my DD is totally hooked on Wizard of Oz and wants to be Dorothy for Halloween. The good news is that it should be a cool enough costume for Florida in September. My question is two-fold. Where do I get a Dorothy costume that's "nicer". By nicer DD will probably want to wear it outside of Halloween. Then second - what costumes should DH & I do and how do we make them where they could bearable in the Florida heat?

I would try Ebay for the costume. As for you and DH, I would suggest making matching halloween tshirts (there are plenty of designs on the DISigns forum thread) if you don't want to wear costumes. It will be super hot even at night so I would do anything that is heavy or long-sleeved.

Last year, my boys got little capers (they are t-shirts with capes that velcro on) and, anyhoo, DH and I didn't want to dress up because of the heat so I decided that deadpan t-shirts would be the best way to go. So, I got bright orange tees that said "Super Hero Support Crew" on them. I got them from zazzle but they could easily be made inexpensively at home. We got so many compliments, mostly because of the ease and coolness of the costumes.

With a Wizard of Oz theme, you could make shirts that say "Surrender Dorothy!" or "I am the flying monkey" or "Picture me as a flying monkey" or "If I only had a brain" or "Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my!" Shall I stop now? :lmao: Just thought I'd throw the idea out there if you weren't interested in traditional costumes. Good luck!

I have a nice handmade Dorothy costume here that was going on ebay soon..

I agree with the poster that said ebay may have something for Dorothy. She can carry a picnic basket to gather her candy in.

If you want to be the wicked witch you could wear a black t-shirt that says "I'll get you my pretty" with black shorts and a witches hat.

Your husband could wear a green t-shirt that says "if I only had a brain" with tan shorts and have fake straw coming out of them. Maybe you could even find a hat that looks like the scarecrow.

Thanks for posting this. My dd (5) is also hooked on Wizard of Oz and is deadset on being Dorothy for Halloween this year. I am also looking for a Dorothy costume for MNSSHP!

My 6 year old adores WoOz. She was Dorothy last year in a costume made by my mom - it still fits, and it is just gorgeous. She also had a WoOz birthday party at her theater school. We made a yellow brick road and Emerald City, and the girls learned a dance and song from the play which they performed for the parents at the end of the party. It was just incredible!

Here is her costume, made by Grammy.

For you and DH, you could be Elphaba (the Wicked Witch from Wicked) or Glinda the Good Witch. DH could be any of her buddies - Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion - or even the Wizard.

Sounds great!
