If you're wearing costumes, do you plan to dress as Disney characters? I was thinking my family of four could go as the Flintstones because they would be easy to make. My son and daughter got excited about the idea. (DH will probably humor me and dress as Fred, but I haven't actually told him yet!) Are we going to be uncool if we're not something Disney?

No
Go for it.
Your free family photo will look neat to be all in one theme.
There are many that go to the MNSSHP with no costume at all.

When we went last year there was a family of 4 that went as the Flinstones. Dad was Fred, Wilma was mom...etc....... It was really cute and the costumes were amazing. We saw them at the CR at Chef Mickeys. People dress in whatever they want and you see all kinds there. I was a doctor, my mother a sports fan, and DD was Sleeping Beauty. We are going again this year but haven't decided what we are going as yet. Of course DD will be a princess and since we have all of those costumes already that will be easy!:D

I was wondering about wearing my big, heavy Malificent costume. I don't know if it would be too hot and if I could keep everyone from stepping on the back. I don't want to fight with my costume all night and miss out on all the MNSSHP fun. Then again, it is a cool costume. Any ideas?
Do you wear you're costume all night or just at the parades?

What we did last year for our family of 8 was go as the ...."The Croc Hunter" family. I was Terri, my hubby was Steve Irwin(really looks like him!), my daughter was Bindhi Sue (their daughter) and my 5 boys had on the back of their shirts phrases that Steve likes to say such as..."Cricky!"..."Ain;t she a Beut?!", "The Croc Hunter".
Our Halloween party picture was great with us all in a "theme" costume.

We all wore Khacki t-shirts and shorts. On the shirt fronts I ironed on a wildlife screen of animals(all in a black-muted pattern) on different parts of the shirts such as the top right of the shirt, going down the sleeve, accross the middle, etc. At the neck we wore leopard skin neckerchiefs tied at the side. I put my daughters hair in pony tails and tied them with a stiff 2 inch ribbon that looked like cheetah skin. Everyone noticed us and we heard alot of positive comments and laughs behind us when they saw the names on the back of our shirts(ironed on black letters.)
Even Safari Steve noticed us and commented!!!

It was so Hot when we went to the party...it was kind of miserable. The type of heat that had our small boys with sweat on their noses and you could feels drips of sweat roll down your back. We were so grateful that we had on these clothes. Yes it was still hot at midnight. I saw people with those Tigger costumes that were thick and heavy with only their faces sticking out and kids with heavy costumes..we just knew that someone would pass out from heat exhaustion!!!

If your costume is very accurate, you may be refused admission. Adults who look too much like characters are considered a safety/security risk, as well as compromising to character integrity. During normal operation, adults in any costumes are generally not allowed, but restrictions are somewhat relaxed during MNSSHP (it is Halloween, after all). Just a heads-up.

No, that rule does not apply to kids. It only applies to adults who could be confused for our characters. A 3' tall Cinderella is certainly not going to pose a problem.

Thanks Steve! I was just wondering. I had made my DD (14) an Evil Queen costume and it looks just like the one she wears in the parks.

I went as Satine from Moulin Rouge(with a red wig and the dress from the elephant scene:) ).I ended up singing in PI with a guy dressed as Christian:) and people seemed to like it(but heels are hard to walk in at times)

My friend Heather has a wonderful picture up in the Haunted Mansion breakroom of her with a little girl whose mother made her a very accurate reproduction of the Mansion costume. It's sooo cute! She even had a bat-hat and a GOH badge!

Now I'm a bit confused. Is it acceptable for adults to dress up then? If for example an adult wore a red & white potted dress with muse ears went, would they be refused admission, or does the rule just apply to adults dressed as face characters? Also, do adults really dress up for MNSSHP? I'm worried that if I do dress up I'll look like a complete lemon!

Adults are allowed to dress up for MNSSHP.
Adults are not supposed to dress as face characters (depends on how accurate their costume is... a manager will make the call.)
Kids can dress as anything they like, as long as they don't have blood/gore or an unsafe mask.

The costume I described in my last post (accurate reproduction of the Mansion costume) was adorable on a 7-year-old, but on an adult, it would not have passed through the gates. When you have 50,000 adults dressed as cowboys, space-people, and adventurers on a daily basis, you have to be picky about what the other adults wear. If you are still confused, please PM me.
