HI, I am from the UK but just wanted to get an American view of this also!

We had decided that we would have single jabs for our DS. We took him to the clinic last Thusday for the measels injection and they asked if he was allergic to eggs. We suspected he was as he had taken a reaction to marshmallow but at the time was too young to be skin tested.

We had him skin tested this evening and he is allergic to egg. This rules out the single jabs (they are egg based) as they would have to be done at a hospital and there are no consultants who will do that as the drugs are not licensed in the UK.

The GP says the MMR is the way to go and the single jabs are just wasting time. After reading info on the internet over the last few days I am terrified about giving DS the MMR am I being silly? I know it's stupid but at this stage we are considering doing nothing which is probably worse.

What are your experiences with the MMR?

My younger brother wasn't able to do the MMR because he had a readtion to one of the components (don't remember which one). Our Ped just told DM to do the seperate shots and leave out the component that bothered him.

If you are concerned take your research into the Ped and talk to them about why you are having fears about the shot.

We're going to do single shots instead of the combo MMR vaccine. I'd also like to wait until DD is a little older. I think our pediatrician typically does this vaccine at 15 months.

We do the singles as well.

I made them break her shots to singles and I also did not let them give her more than one per visit. It felt like she was getting shots every month until she was 18 months old LOL but I like it better than way. My friends son got a triple shot (I think it was DPT) and had a seizure right after it and is now 40 but will never be more than 4.

Thats really sad.

Thanks for all the replies. I really want to get the single jabs but they are egg based and my soon could have a reaction. He is 17 months old at the moment and the immunologist says he will test him again next year to see if he has out grown the allergy.

DS got the MMR, and he was fine. He was the tiniest bit fussy that night, but slept well, and was his normal self the next day. I actually like the combo vacs, the less jabs, the better, IMHO. :goodvibes

My Ped. just ordered the single MMR vaccinations for DS as I too am petrified of letting him have the MMR.

I'm wondering if I should have him tested for an egg allergy before he has the measles component.

If he didn't have a reaction to the flu shot, does that mean he'll be ok with the measles (as far as the egg part is concerned)?????:confused3

I think the latest evidence was in The Lancet and said that there was absolutely NO proof of a link between autism, inflammatory bowel disease development and the MMR. The issue with autism and the MMR seems to be a co-incidental temporal relationship simply due to the current Guidelines for timing of the vaccine in the UK. I can however understand that people who have children with these conditions sometimes believe that their case is due to MMR vaccination, but you have to look at very sound research versus less sound research versus anecdotal evidence to get the full picture. Much better to get your child vaccinated with the MMR than waiting to see if you can get the single vaccines and the child unfortunately develops e.g. measles followed by SSPE (a horrendous form of encephalitis due to measles).

Spoke with my doc today who says he can't help. I have managed to find a few clinics who have the injections with non egg based drugs so will research that a bit more.

I would prefer to have it done at a hospital though after the reaction he took to his 8 weeks jabs but may not have a choice.
