We are planning on returned to WDW around Dec 17 through the 21. Would we have to purchase tickets for the MM Christmas party?

If we don't purchase tickets....what will we miss out on?

You do have to purchase a ticket to stay in the park after closing.

I'm not sure when the last party is this year, but the day following the last party of the year they start doing the Christmas parade, shows and fireworks in the MK as part of the regular schedule (no additional purchase necessary). It appears you are there when you might be able to catch that. The special character meets will not be held during the day though.
