Every year our school system has a MLK convo to honor service projects done over christmas break. I think its a great idea. They pass out the project over christmas break and then you have 2 weeks to complete your project. Anyone who completes the project is invited to a special citywide program and gets out of school for part of the day and gets a tee-shirt. My DD has been doing this for several years and loves doing it.
This year, her teacher "forgot to pass out the papers" No big deal, we did a service project during the break. 2 in fact. She asked the teacher when she got back where the papers where for the service project. The teacher looked around her desk and found them. She gave DD the sheet and said she thought it was too late to turn it in. DD said that was ok, she would turn it in anyway. DD asked if the other kids could have the paper too and the teacher said, Oh, no one would want to do that?????????
She brought the paper home, and they had a specific service project to do this year, not just anyone. You had to write letters of hope to those who need it. There were addresses for nursing homes, tornado victims, hurrican victims or you could write to the military. DD wrote letters to the military Hospital in Germany because her DB had been there when he was in Germany.
They announced yesterday that 2 yes 2 children in the entire school had done the project. This is a school with over 700 kids. I am not sure why more didn't turn it in. I don't know if the teachers didn't pass out the sheets, or if the kids just didn't do it. It just made me sad that only 2 kids will go to the program from our school.
