Any advice on how /where to feed a hungry 9 yo boy at MK on the dining plan?

Last year, we used our TS for dinner so we just snacked all day. This year we are using most of them for lunch. The other parks seem to have a better kids selection.

Im starting to think I may have to go oop for him...mac n cheese or chilled chicken and cheese isjust not gonna cut it.

Any advice is welcome!

Is El Pirata always closed in Sept? We have never found it open.

Have you considered upgrading him to the adult plan? I know it costs more but now that the kids menus are so limited, I know my kids at age 9 would have gotten very bored and very hungry on kids meals.

Of course, the adult plan will probably mean some wasted food! I know my 11 year old couldn't come anywhere near finishing much of her food last week on the DDP.

You might also be able to share some of you and your husband's meals with him to give him some variety. We found the meals at Columbia Harbor House to be pretty large and a nice change. I loved their tuna sandwich. Also, Cosmic Rays has some different options in large portions that he could share off of your plate.

It can be hard to find the right compromise for kids in that 9-13 age range.

oh wow I totally agree! My oldest is 9 and I am a little scared how he is going to do with the kids menus. They really need to make better child menus. Not every kids likes grilled chicken, mac n cheese and vegetables. Why can't they have a cheeseburger on there somewhere? They all seem to be the same.

Grr.

I have the opposite problem. My dd is 10 years old, but is very tiny and would prefer kids meals. We plan to skip buffet meals because it wouldn't make sense (she would be considered an adult). But, can she order from the kids meals at regular Table Service restaurants? Or must she order from the adult menu?

ShellKing: My 11 year old likes adult style food but doens't like the huge portions. So I have had the following happen, as recent as two weeks ago:

Ordered a kids meal at several places where the adult menu didn't have anything that interested her or she just wasn't very hungry. We were charged an adult credit.

At Yachtsmen, she didn't want a steak, and I didn't want to burn two ts credits for a $6 plate of mac and cheese. So I asked if I could pay out of pocket for her a kids meal, I was honest, said she was 11 and they gladly let me do that. I did the same thing at Brown Derby. I don't mind using one ts credit for a kids meal, but hated to use two. Both places said this was fine and they do it all the time.

If you are paying out of pocket, you will have no trouble at any non buffet place ordering a kids meal. I actually like the buffets for my adult paying, but kid aged kids. They will eat enough fruit, chicken nuggets and ice cream to justify them for me! So I am fine paying that adult price for a buffet, esp. a character buffet when you are paying for the entertainment as well.

I thought about upgrading him, but our TS ADRs are all fine for him. The other parks have better kids meal options or places without seperate kids menus so I am just really in a bind at MK and maybe TL.

I guess I could share my meal and bank his CS credits for breakfast or something? :confused3

according to allears...

Pecos Bill's lists a hamburger on the kids meal
Pinnochio Haus lists a turkey and cheese rollup

Maybe someone who has been to them recently can confirm whether those choices are accurate.
Another possibility could be to pop over to a nearby resort for lunch. It wouldn't be far to go to a monorail resort like Grand Floridian or Polynesian, right?

I feel for you, truly. One reason we are doing the deluxe ddp is because my kids would have been bored silly with the kids' choices. With the deluxe, we can do a lot of buffets :)

Doesn't Caseys have no kids menu. I'm pretty sure you can get a full sized hotdog/fries there for a childs CS credit.

Thank you. I should have included that we are not using the dining plan and thus paying out of pocket. If she's okay with a $6 dinner -- then why order her a $24 dinner. We do have two buffets on our itinerary - Boma for dinner and also the safari/breakfast package. We will, of course, pay the adult (10+) price for those for her. I just wanted to keep a few of our other TS ADRs without worrying that she would be forced to order from the adult menu. BTW, our TS ADRs are for Brown Derby, Liberty Tavern, Coral Gardens.

You will be fine to order off the kids menu at Brown Derby and Coral Reef. At Liberty Tree if you are doing lunch than its a menu, if its dinner its a fixed price, sort of like a buffet where you'll have to pay the full price.

I don't know why a place geared for kids doesn't have a more intelligent system for kids in that 9-13 range. But the servers are very used to this and very accomodating letting kids that are "adults" order off the kids menu. Have a great trip!
