I think the coffin gives a kind of closure. I'm sure there were many memorials after 911 and other tragedies where there was an "empty" coffin. It's like all the memories can be assigned a place we can visit and give homage.
My cousin was killed on USAir 427 in 1994. His funeral was about a week later, there was an empty casket to make it seem "real". It was a high speed crash and the remains were all scattered, no one was identified at that point. They did eventually identify some small remains and they were put in a masoleum.
Considering the Jacksons, I think it was empty and it was there for "dramatic effect".
