So, since this was my first trip to Disney World, I'm going to try to do a dining review. If I mess something up please forgive me.
We arrived on a Monday afternoon. I was so thankful I didn't try to go and do a park that afternoon, we just took it easy and went over to Downtown Disney for our reservations at Portobello. I was very excited about this as it got great reviews on the podcast, but I found it merely 'acceptable'. The duck dish I ordered was lukewarm, and on the bland side. My husband asked simply for spaghetti ( off the kids menu) and was charged for a full meal. On the other hand, my son (who turned five while we were there) liked his hot dog and fries. The wait person was polite, however, he was very scarce after the meal was delivered. We waited 15 minutes for a check.
Tuesday, we did Disney Studios, and ate at the Hollywood & Vine Character lunch. This was buffet and all three of us really enjoyed it. The food was hot, and tasty and the staff was very attentive. The very hard working server took good care of us and brought my son a birthday card "signed" by all the characters that were there. My son was extremely shy so he didnt do much interacting, but did enjoy watching (from afar) the show that was being put on. The card was a very nice touch too!
Wednesday, we did Animal Kingdom and we had reservations at BOMA. I LOVED this place. I love different foods and enjoyed nearly everything I tried. My husband on the other hand doesn't so he was thrilled to eat from the 'kids' bar, of chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese. All the hot food was hot. The soups I tried were the carrot and ginger (yum!) and a pasta /seafood soup that was delicious. The herb crusted salmon was just perfectly prepared and the Fu-Fu (the sweet potato/potato dish) was just the right spiciness.. The dessert bar was huge and had a variety of treats that was nearly overwhelming. There was a flour-less chocolate cake that was yummy, and a coconut trifle thing and a bread pudding that were both out of this world!! Our wait person was awesome, he was attentive with the drink refills and anticipated our need for ketchup for my sons' meal. He also brought my son a birthday cupcake and was so really sweet.
Thursday we had burgers and chicken nuggets at the Starlight Cafe. I waited until 1:45 to get in line, and still had to wait nearly 30 minutes to get served. So many people in front of me were still "thinking" about what they wanted by the time they got to the cashier.
The burgers are great and we also got an order of chili cheese fries. My husband and I split it. With the sides that came with the burgers and nuggets we had plenty of food and had apple slices and apple sauce left over for a snack later in the day in the park. Very good deal, very good meal.
Friday we did Epcot and ate lunch at the Rose & Crown. We again waited until 1:30 to eat (did not have reservations) and was told there would be a 30 minute wait. So we went over to the iced tea stand across the street. (YOU HAVE TO HAVE SOME OF THAT!) and after 15 minutes our pager went off. So back to the restaurant. We were seated inside after asking for outside seats. (oh well). Our wait person was cordial and took our order and was friendly enough. But after our appetizer was served, our food came by another staff person; and after that it was harder to find any service. We also had to search for a wait person to retrieve our check and then waited over 15 minutes for the check to be delivered. Another 10 to get the credit card back. I was extremely disappointed in this restaurant. The food was good. The appetizer was the fruit and cheese tray. Very tasty! I can recommend this appetizer whole heartedly if you like cheeses. We both ordered the Shepard's Pie for our entree and my son got the kids meal. I knew it wasn't going to be a very young kid friendly restaurant, but I was glad to see my son would at least eat the mac and cheese. My son would not have eaten the kids appetizers (carrot sticks?) but they weren't brought or offered either. I had to ask for the fruit bowl that was supposed to come with the kids meal. The server (once tracked down) responded that "oh you haven't been charged for that but if you want one I will bring it for you".
We actually cancelled our dinner reservation for San Angel that evening because we were slightly disappointed in the table service restaurants at Disney World. We had much better experiences and spent less money at the counter service restaurants.
So that's my 'review'. I hope i did this right. I appreciate all the good information I got from reading other reviews and am thankful for the opportunity to share my experiences.
