Mission Space: My Rant follow-up

I also have a chronic illness that causes dizziness (intermittant, sometimes I can basically fall over standing still... OOPs! however darkness seems to intensify the effect , then I'm a walking pin ball bouncing from wall to wall) and have had occasional problems on inverted loop coasters.( love them anyway) and since I can hang on to my husband and I basically just look drunk, if it isn't too bad it's worth it. however wonder if you had no problems with this what so ever? thanks for the info. I really want to ride this if I can overcome the claustrophobia bit.

Aside from the head rush from the intense G's felt in the first few seconds of the launch, I experienced no problems whatsoever. I walked off the ride as easily as I walk off It's a Small World. I also am a little funny after looping coasters, but ride them anyway.;) The claustrophobia thing isn't really too bad on MS. I think it's because the action begins pretty quickly after you're strapped in. Not much time to think about it. I think you'll be OK. Like I said, those first few seconds, you might be swearing at yourself for trying it, but it does even out nicely after that.:D

I must admit before leaving for WDW in August I was a little bit afraid to ride this ride after reading some of the posts. I also get car sick, plane sick, teacup, star tours sick etc etc.

But heck Ill try anything once....

We were in WDW from Aug 19-27. I really thought that this would be "the big line to wait in" but we waited maybe 20 minutes (and that was the longest we ever waited for this ride).

I made sure to keep my head back and looking strait ahead and absolutley LOVED this ride. Never had a sick feeling and we even rode it after a full meal at Living Seas!

We must of rode this ride 8 times while we were there and several of those were get off the ride and run back on again. We were amazed at the lack of lines for this ride.

My husband also has MS. On our trip 2 weeks ago we rode mission space 6 different times. He did not have any problems. Sometimes on looping coasters he does get dizzy. You can not go on a full stomach. You MUST listen to the directions you get, look straight ahead at your screen etc. We also did not ride this consecutively. We waited a couple of hours between rides.

It is an awesome ride. I think the closest I will ever come to space travel. Try it once, don't be afraid if you really want to do it. Sometimes I think that if you do something thinking you will be sick, then you will be (mind over matter).

I would have great sympathy for guests sick for hours or days after riding MS :( You don't want to ruin your holiday because of one ride.

I did not feel a thing, just thought it was an awesome ride, loved Gary Sinese, thought the habitat area was cool to watch going round, and round and round...

If you think you may throw up... have an air sick bag with you just in case.

>>^..^<<

I think I fit the OP's original post of middle age and at 42 and 11 months I LOVED IT!

I didn't have a problem with the ride at all. I tend to be claustrophobic and didn't find it confining. I did keep my head against the back of the seat and look straight ahead at the screen. I could feel the G's but not any spinning. Being pooh sized, I found there to be plenty of room. No problems after the ride either. My kids and I thought it was great.

We rode MS on Wednesday (9/3). There was NO line! It was AWESOME! I'm a thirty-something and rode with my 10 YO. I do get claustrophobic and DID feel nervous after pulling down the restraint (thick, solid straps that pull down over your body). When the console moves in, it does make the capsule seems small. You can't see the others in the pod because of the restraint. My best advice is to BREATHE! Remember to breathe and focus on the screen. You get so into the action that you forget the restraints and close quarters. I thought the ride was great. My DD rode again with DH. (DH, who is prone to motion sickness, will never ride again!) I didn't feel any dizziness afterwards.

I'll definitely ride again our next trip in November! It reminded me of flight training (think "stall/spin" exercises) - you swear you never want to do it again, but the adrenaline rush is SO great you KNOW you will!:smooth:

does anyone know how long this ride is open each day?

Yes, Mission: Space opens with the park and closes with the park, so in essence, from 9 am to 9 pm (like Test Track, it doesn't close at 6 pm with the rest of Future World), except for Extra Magic Hour morning, when it opens at 8 am.

How are kids doing with this ride. We'll be there in October and my DD will have just turned 9. We read the Disney Magazine article about M:S and she and I are psyched to ride it.

Are the kids doing well in terms of keeping their eyes on the screen and all of that? I don't want to give her a bunch of warnings about the ride that will make her not want to give it a try. (She is easily dissuaded.)

do you have any opinion about which seat would be the least claustophobic inducing? at first I thought by the door but if that is close to the seat you might feel more open in one of the middle seats? any ideas?

I was fortunate to get the opportunity to ride M:S for the first time last week. Got fast passes for the first try but the wait was 5 mins or less later in the day and I was able to essentially walk back on. I was a bit nervous at first because of some of the reviews, but I found the ride to be fantastic. If I did not know that it spun ahead of time, I would never have figured it out. If you follow instructions, all that you feel are the changing G-forces. This ride is definitely physical. You feel it. However, I didn't see 1 person get sick.

I'm here laughing at your post..... lightheaded going through the gift shop LOL!.....
LOL, Bruce. I guess I forgot to say 'walking through the gift shop, AFTER riding ToT', not just a stroll through the shop. :teeth: I think the bouncing of my brain my do it to me.

How long does the ride last? Like 5 minutes??? Just wondering how long you have to ride if you are feeling sick?

The restraints are so bulky, it's hard to see the person next to you. (Unless you lift you're head - DON'T do that once the ride starts!) Word of warning - don't pull the restraint down too tight because it WON'T go back up. Pull it down in increments once you get your head through.

I rode with my DD (10) her first time. In addition, the other crew members were a pre-teen boy (maybe 12-13) and his sister (about 7). I was a little nervous for them. The boy had ridden before and was talking his sister through. I talked too. ("WooHoo, here we go", "Remember to breathe", "Watch you screen", "Good Job Crew!" [I was the Commander], "Everyone OK?" etc.) to try to keep them focused and from panicing. I had to push a button for the young girl (she was the pilot - one of the middle seats) because she couldn't reach it. (she said a little bitty "Thank you" - she was VERY cute). I could touch my DD's legs - which I patted a few times, just to let her know I was there.

Anyway, I don't think it makes a difference which seat you pick. Once the restraints are down and the console comes in you can't see the doors.

My DD's second time, with DH, someone threw-up once the restraints came down. There was such a mess everyone had to unload and move them to the other side. Maybe the person pulled the restraint down too tight? Ewww! That would be so gross to be strapped in next to a person when they blew - Where are you going to go??

The ride is quick - maybe 5 minutes? The worst part is after the restraints come down and the console comes in - it's definitely close. During blast off the screen begins to fill with clouds (from the launch rockets - picture the shuttle taking off). Once you break through the atmosphere (a lot of Gs), it's great! If you focus on your screen (each person has one in front of them) and get into the "show", you'll love it! As another poster said - it's the closest I'll ever get to space!;)

One quick word on the spinning. Over and over during the preshow they remind you to skip the attraction if you can't handle spinning. Well, I can't handle Mad Tea Party or Astro Oribiter, so I was a little nervous about this. After the ride I asked DH why they kept warning us about spinning, as the ride didn't spin. He said, "yes it does, that's why they tell you to keep your head back and stare at the screen, you won't know you're spinning unless you turn your head sideways".

I rode it again and still didn't feel any spinning. So I guess it's like the Earth - it spins so fast, you don't even know it.;)

I think the disney folks should use your last two sentences in their ad campaign!

I rode it last week (9/4) and walked on, no wait. During the ride besides the G force feeling there was no other sensation that made me feel queezy. After the first time we went to TT and then came back to MS and walked on again. After that ride I felt queezy but it went away rather quickly. We rode it again in the evening without any bad feelings.

As for needing your "readers" I wear bifocals and I thought the screen was fine but maybe reading glasses would help as well. When we go in Oct. I'll make sure my DH takes his.

:p
jann1033 - LOL! I don't think Disney wants to dwell on the "vomit factor" that's for sure! ;)

I didn't notice the spinning at all!

In people's experience, how much has meclazine or dramamine helped with the discomfort? I hate roller coasters because of the "thrill" (ie FEAR) factor but I think I could handle M:S if the disorientation was minimized and there wasn't much attempt to terrorize the rider. I'd love to experience the theming but don't want to be scared witless.
