I just rode the Green side last week.
I'm a big Orange-side fan, but my daughter would never ride it with us. I had to convince her to try the Green side -- which does, in fact, spin. It just doesn't spin nearly as much as the Orange side. While we were in line, another mother and her teenaged daughter asked about the ride. I told them that I had not ridden the Green side yet, but I have friends who find it much more palatable than the Orange side. They asked a ton of questions and I tried to prepare them and answer all their questions, reassuring them that they could get in the capsule and see how tight it was, and still opt out if they wanted. They were most apprehensive despite the fact that practically everyone in the briefing room was desperately trying to reassure them.
The mom was most worried about the claustrophobia thing. When we got in the capsule, the CM offered to close the door and tilt the control panel toward us so the mom could ascertain whether or not she could handle it. The moment the door closed, she said loudly, "NO." Her daughter tapped on the door, and they exited the capsule. My daughter and I moved over into the center seats. The CM talked the other mom and her daughter into trying the ride, we moved back to our original spots, and at this point, the ride finally went into pause mode, which I've never experienced. I mean -- honestly -- the CM's give you every chance to decide whether or not to do the ride. You have lots of time. You can change your mind. Repeatedly. Nobody will hold it against you. We all want you to have a good time. This is Disney! Y'know?
So finally everyone climbed into the capsule for real, and the ride started. As a die-hard, Orange-side, gimme-all-the-G's-you-can thrillseeker, I found the Green side completely tame. The only point at which I felt anything that approached the coolness and intensity of the Orange side was when the wings were deployed for the descent onto Mars. And even that was quite tame.
The apprehensive mom and daughter totally enjoyed the ride, and as we exited, they and my daughter all agreed emphatically that they were glad they tried it. They also agreed that they were silly to have worried about it so much, and they would ride it again any time.
My conclusion? Mission:Space rocks. Seriously. I may prefer the Orange side, but I'm glad Disney created the Green side for the people who couldn't handle the the more intense version.
Now if only Disney would create a Buzz-Lightyear-type shooting gallery side of IASW for those of us who aren't thrilled with singing dolls....
