So, my kids want to ride Mission Space next month. They are not thrill seekers at ALL. I have ridden the Orange side numerous times, but never Green. How is Green different? Is there still spinning? Is it more similar to Star Tours? The kids have ridden Star Tours but one doesn't really like it. The most daring thing they will ride nowadays is kiddie coaster type rides.

Will Mission Space Green be okay for them. My youngest is 10 and wants to see space, the moon, Mars, etc.

green doesn't spin.
sounds like you've been on orange and star tours so i'll let you make the judgement whether your kids will like it.

It is similar movement to Star Tours...I think slightly milder. The tilting maybe slightly more pronounced as it tilts you way backwards for takeoff. I am very prone to motion sickness & I prefer MS as it has the air conditioner blowing in your face the whole time...and the shoulder harness helps me feel less jerky than a seatbelt would. There's no spinning on the green side. Sounds like your kiddos would do fine if they're fine with Star Tours. (i do not ride roller coasters...not even Big Thunder by the way)

What they do is tilt the capsule inward a bit so it feels like you are pinned to your seat, but it's only at 1 G, so really it's just a light recline. There is no centrifuge action, just some shaking and swaying. That is is.

Sounds perfect. Thank you for the explanation!

Mission Space is my favorite and I had to ride the green side for about five years due to an injury. My husband rode it with me. We both agreed that there is no difference other than the spinning so your kids won't miss a darn thing at all.

I think Mission Space Green is milder than Star Tours. I have not ridden Orange, so I cannot compare Green to Orange.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, I'm from the DLR side......upcoming first trip to Epcot....does the whole party (me, DH and DS) have to do the same side? Or can I do Green and they do Orange but we still go together? Does Orange just move back and forth like Star Tours? Trying to understand this ride and avoid aggravating my back issues.....

You can split up but you will not be together for the ride. You can be together in the line up until almost the load point tho. It is nothing at all like Star Tours. The orange side has a LOT of spinning and a lot of people get sick on it (think Tilt-a-Whirl at the carnival except you're strapped into a seat with a shoulder harness). They put air-sick bags right in front of every seat just to give you an idea. They blow a really powerful blasting A/C into all of the space capsules tho - I think partially to help people with their claustrophobia - just good to keep fresh air on you.

I say Green is more intense than Star Tours but that might be because it's more enclosed

I would rank Green, Star Tours, then Orange.

I hadn't done any of them in a while and when we went last month we did green and I still got a bit motion sick. When we got to ST about halfway through I realized I shouldn't have been on it, fixed my sight on the person in front of me and took deep breaths to make it without being sick.

And all that sucks, because I think they are fun rides - but now I know I really must not do them.

I'll expand on the real difference between Mission: SPACE Green Team Less Intense Training and Orange Team More Intense Training. The ride is setup as a pod with 4 passengers, each hanging from an arm of a large centrifuge, and each pod can be tilted to the sides and swung inward and outward, though not at a very steep angle. The Green Team and Orange Team pods are identical.

On Orange Team, the centrifuge will activate to simulate g-forces. It does this three times during the ride only for about 10 to 15 seconds at a time. The idea is for you to feel the extra g-forces (think of a "Gravitron" ride at a carnival), then when they subside, you feel lighter, thus simulating weightlessness (it's just perception of course). Again, this only happens during 3 sequences (launch, lunar insertion, entering Mars atmosphere) for a total of less than a minute of sustained extra G forces. According to Wikipedia, it is a maximum of 2.5 Gs.

On Green Team, everything is exactly the same except there will be no spinning. They do tilt you back into your seat so you get a little feeling of being on your back (like when the rocket is upright for launch). This of course takes place at 1 G, the norm for everybody all the time.

If spinning bothers you, remember that you are fully enclosed and cannot really tell you are spinning. All you feel is like you are being pressed into your seat and your arms will feel heavier as you try to work the controls. However, if you look to the sides, this can really mess with your equilibrium and cause motion sickness. It is best to keep your eyes locked on your monitor. This is not a concern on Green Team.

The bigger issue is claustrophobia, and it apples to both Green Team and Orange Team. The pods are identical, and not only are you confined to your seat by roller-coaster style shoulder restraints (even on Green Team), the console moves very close to you when the pod closes. This is disturbing to some people. If you are unsure, the CM will lower the console before closing the door. Get his attention fast, because once the door closes, you'll be hard to hear and once the ride starts, you're on it for the full mission. It'll be 3 minutes, 55 seconds until that pod opens up again.

Sorry for the novel, but I hope it helps people. I am actually a big fan of Mission: SPACE and I think it uses cool technology (okay, I just love to play with all the switches). The warnings at the front of the ride can scare a lot of people off, but they don't really explain why. For the record I ride Green Team most of the time because of a back issue, and while I can ride Orange Team I don't think my doctor would approve (shh, don't tell him). I don't think they are really all that different and have just as much fun on Green Team.

Now, go make Gary Sinese proud, ISTC Cadets!

I was scared to ride Mission Space for years, and when I finally rode the green really enjoyed it. I found it to have a very similar feel to Star Tours. Maybe slightly milder. I don't do well on Teacups, but I have no issues on MS. Your child that doesn't like Star Tours may not like it-- but it is a little different since there are just 4 of you in the pod and you are more secure so that might make a difference.

They are entirely different standby lines and the main problem you would have would be the difference in wait times. We have been multiple times when the green line is walk on or under 10 minutes, and the orange line is 30 or 45 minutes. If you do FP+, unless it has changed they put everyone in the same line and then split you into orange or green when you get to the front so you would be in line together most of the time and riding about the same time that way. We had one time when we were in the FP+ line and it was pretty long and everyone in front of us was wanting orange. We got stuck waiting to get to the front to get on green- when the people that got in standby green after us were all on, and probably had already gotten off the ride.

I would add that if your kids are at all claustrophobic, they probably shouldn't ride Mission Space. I am not really claustrophobic but even I get that 'OMG I'm gonna get smooshed' feeling when the capsule closes.

They have recently changed to allocate 3 of the four simulators to Orange Team where it used to be 2 for each. I haven't seen the impact on wait times, but one would assume Green Team would go up and Orange Team would go down. Actually, usually when I am there they are only running two simulators anyway because both sides are walk on, but in busy summer months I can see it.

Brian, what's the consensus on closing your eyes during the ride? I've heard parents suggest to their kids that if they feel bad, "just close your eyes".

I know CapCom tells us not to, but it isn't clear why.

(Wait, she's not Capcom, that's Lt Dan. . . . . )

Not Brian, but I get VERY motion sick and my experience is closing your eyes makes it MUCH worse. If I get motion sick I pick one thing straight ahead that's stationary as possible and stare at it. If I close my eyes I seem to lose more sense of where I am and the motion making me sick just intensifies greatly. I'm sure it varies but person but closing my eyes while motion sick has been a bad idea every single time.
