Mission: Space" a centrifuge - get a physical before riding

this is really getting blown out of proportion
Let me ask a serious question -- and please think hard about your answer: Is there anything presented in the news these days, or discussed in online forums, that is discussed "in proportion"? It seems to me that if it isn't blown out of proportion, it doesn't make the headlines -- that people, both in the media and just regular folks -- seem driven by societal (?) pressures to present everything totally out of perspective with the reality.

That is THE STUPIDEST statement I have EVER READ in my ENTIRE LIFE!
I can't believe how TERRIBLY INSULTING your post was.
I think I will NEVER get over reading it.
I am offended.
I am angry.
I am not going to TAKE it anymore.

I think I will stop reading the threads here, resign my posting privileges, cancel my ISP account, sell my computer, and never go out in public again.

Why, the very IDEA makes me SICK (and I think I may have high blood pressure!)

"Totally out of perspective!" How DARE you!

;)

Really sorry Robo.... I didn't realize that was a joke, so I actually reported it as harrassment!

Really really sorry! I sent a retraction. :rotfl:

But only for very brief periods of time....

Mission:Space's g-forces are for only about 10-15 seconds each. It's very brief also. Maybe a little longer than a normal roller coaster, but not by much.

Yeah. Robo's post would have been better with a smilie at the end of it or something....

There was smiley, but it was very subtle -- just a little blue wink (on the light blue background -- it almost blends in :)). The only reason why I did a double-take was that I saw it was Robo, and it wasn't like him to ... uh ... Hmm... why did I do a double-take? :) :) :)

Right back AT you. :thumbsup2

I only posted the joke because I saw it was YOU. :rotfl:

BTW, my background color is WHITE. The blue smiley shows up very clearly from here.

me too! holy crow this is way past nuttiness now..and yet somehow i am unable to NOT click open the stupid ms treads :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: and now i have that I have learned i must get an exam before i go to wdw i have that stupid old Olivia newton john song in my head "Physical "...although i don't think she meant the same thing and never even heard she rode ms.

"Or maybe I'm wrong...are we in fact really being miniaturized before we ride Body Wars too?:scared1: Surely that can't be easy on the human body."

well of course it's not! why do you think they shut the life pavilion down?..people weren't deminiaturizing and the sweepers kept sweeping them up.. i heard there were big law suits but of course no one heard about them since the mafia and wdw are "simpatico" and what goes on at wdw stays at wdw if you get my drift or at least that's what my great uncle who once saw Walt Disney get into a car that was only 150 ft away said so he practically knew the guy and exactly how he would handle everything at wdw and nothing has changed since

The lady had a brain bleed caused by hypertension. I have been on the fence about riding MS on our trip in 2 weeks. A year and a half ago I had a brain bleed (not BP related) so I dont think so this year. not worth the risk.

seriously i think that is very wise and what everyone should do, use common sense( or maybe not so "common" after all)

10 or 15 seconds is a LONG time when G forces are being applied. I dare you to find any rollercoaster that has that much sustained force for that period of time. Another big difference is that while rollercoasters do have lots of G-forces, due to the movement of them you rarely get G forces the same direction for more than a second or two.

Wow..I am sure the OP was being well meaning in suggesting a physical before riding something like M:S. Why all the sarcasm & such?

Personally, any ride (not just M:S) that has THAT many Warning Signs before entering should be carefully considered. Yes, the TWO people who've died on or shortly after this ride DID have a pre-existing condition.....which is the reason for the great suggestion to GET a physical before going on these type rides. Thats the point, if they'd been to the DR & been diagnosed they might not have ridden (or let their child ride).

That is why all the signs are there....partly to protect Disney but also because there IS some element of danger.

My youngest son has a heart condition which went undetected for an amount of time when he was younger...he has since had heart surgery and is probably fine but I would still not put him on the ride. Had this went undiagnosed and we had taken him on this ride, it could have caused something terrible to happen. (His was similar to the 4YO boy who had an enlarged heart & died).

My DH & DS9 rode the ride & thats fine, for MOST people it is fine.

All I am saying is not everyone can have such a flippant attitude. It was a good suggestion if you want to take precautions & not have to worry at all on your vacation.

I've mistaken one joke today as a serious message, so please forgive me for asking: You are joking, right?

Uh, I don't remember whether this was the case with the child, but in the case of the woman, she had been to the doctor and had been diagnosed. She still rode the attraction.

...and while your at it, would you please wash your hands before leaving the bathroom! :stir: :rolleyes2

Uh, no, I don't get the "joke" of this thread...what's so funny? Am I missing something or what?

How many G's does NASA's equipment generate?

How many G's does Disney's Mission:Space generate?

I've got a feeling that those videos I see on history channel in the centerfuge with the faces pealing back is a couple more G's than Disney's "I can barely pick my feet off the floor" g's.

The "joke" I suppose is the suggestion that people should get a physical before coming to WDW, as if it were a specifically hazardous thing to do. My understanding is that people are being sarcastic -- that stuff like this happens everywhere and at any time (the mall, the workplace, the car, etc.) -- we only hear about it when it happens someplace wonderful, where media outlets can get great ratings reporting it.

Mission: Space currently generates brief periods of up to 2G during the ride. It is capable of going higher, but they tried about 3G during initial testing and decided to slow it down a little.

NASA and the US military have centrifuge trainers that can generate much higher centifugal force. Fighter pilots routinely endure up to 9G during training, and astronauts usually go into the 5-7G range.

A healthy person will usually start to pass out around 7-9G. Wiuth training and physical conditioning, pilots are able to withstand more.

The paltry 2G that Mission: Space puts on you is completely harmless, unless you have a serious health problem.
