So I'm in JC Penney earlier, and the main reason for going was to have them remove the security tag off a pair of shorts that I bought a few weeks ago.

I decide to check out what's for sale, and a two tiered table has a sign that says "Buy 1 Get 1 for a $1.00". The top shelf (where the sign with the cute little balloon was placed) was with the South Pole shirts. Bottom tier was South Pole Shorts.

I take my purchses up to pay, and the shirts ring up at full price. I told the sales associate about the sale, and she asks me to go and get the sign, which I do. In the fine print, it's for the shorts on that table, but the sign was placed up with the shirts.

She then in a snotty tone points out the sale was meant for the shorts. I told her the sign was with the shirts and that most people don't read the fine print at the bottom of the sign, they see Buy 1 Get 1 for $1 and that's what draws their attention. I also told her the sign should be moved then.

She says to me in a sarcastic tone "we don't have room."

Well now...that's not MY problem, is it?

I got the shirts as a Buy 1 Get 1 for $1.00 discount. ::yes::

I hope JC Penney learned a lesson.

I see stuff like that all the time.

One of the dumbest I ever saw was "Shirts--$10.00 each or two for $25.00" A penalty for buying more than one, instead of a savings.

hahahahaha

ok - my brother and I pull this on my dad all the time (mind you - we are both grown and out of the house)

"Hey dad - got change for a $20? Yeah... 2 tens and a five?"

and he forks it over w/o thinking about it! heheh We taught my mom that trick - now she does it to him all the time.

sorry - totally off topic - but I had to share! heheh

JC Penney is notorious for this...one reason we try to stay out of that store...everything is always on sale EXCEPT what you seem to want...and when they have special sales it is only on the regularly price items which there then seems to be none of in the store!!!

Good for you! I would have insisted on getting the sale price too!! It's not your fault they set up the table like that!

Another good for you! My mother is to nice to insist on the discount when something is wrong, NOT ME!!

Oh and it doesn't work either when they say "oh, it was in the wrong place." Oh really with 15 other of the SAME EXACT ITEMS?

I agree that its bad show and salesmanship to do it like that- Course there is also the opposite of that and when the customer puts it there and then says well *this one* was on that table.. or when customer a leaves it there on the table then customer b throws a fit over it--

But if there is multiples there than its the stores fault- and I am the first to admit that mistakes are made (especially if we have new people who dont know that you *cant* just put something anywhere you want...

I don't work for JCP, but I am responsible for printing (creation of) signs for the department store where I'm employed. I think we do our best to accurately word the signs, within the parameters were are provided.

I'm sorry you felt taken on this sale - It is a great bargain to get a second of anything for $1 - but I'm also happy that JCP honored your sale for their failure to better place the sign. If I was you, I'd called the store manager and recommend that the display be reveresed for the duration of the sale - placing the shorts in place of the shirts so that customers are less likely to be confused.

Keep this incident in mnd for the future - ALWAYS READ THE SIGN, especially the small print at the bottom. If you are still confused or in doubt, ask a clerk. :wave2:

Actually, you forced the system to get something you didn't deserve. If the sign clearly said shorts, even in the fine print, then you were wrong to assume that the sale was on the shirts. Do you assume the big 50% off banner of the outside of the building means that you can buy it for 1/2 price?

they should have given you the discount because they should have put the sign where it was supposed to be. if they didnt "have room" they could have gotten another table for the shirts or made the small print a little big BIGGER. :p lol. at hyvee this happens all the time so we always no matter what give the item to the customer for free or at an extremely discounted price. good customer service is important and jcpenney is not one of the places that has that.

Whatever....I got the shirt for $1.00 because the sign should have been placed with the item it was intended for.

Sorry you feel I didn't deserve it. Obsviously, JCP did or they wouldn't have allowed me to get it for $1.00. In this case, JCP presented excellent customer service, making me happy, and in return, having me come back as a happy customer, of which I've been for many years.

I was prepared to buy the one shirt anyway, but not two if I had to pay full price!

your jcpenney is so different from ours. many times we have said the same thing you did and they wont give it to us at a discount for anything. i even tried to take a shirt back once and the lady looked at it and me and said oh this has been worn more than once. i was thinking okay since the tags are still on it, no wrinkles or stains of anything ya right give me a break!! sounds like your has good customer service to give out but ours sure does not. i didnt make it clear on my last post but that is what i meant. i used to go to ours all the time but not anymore. i have taken a liking to kohls. i go there sometimes to shop.

ITA. I could see the customer's point if the sign didn't specify shorts.

Actually the sign was placed on the same table with the item, maybe on a separate level, but the same table. And better still THE SIGN SAID SHORTS ARE ON SALE.

Our JCP is pretty good in the customer service department.

But they are continually forgetting to remove the security tags on certain clothing lines!

That's what got me back in the store today! Ha ha, maybe that's their marketing strategy, don't remove the tags, and the customer will have to come back in, and buy more things when they get there! ;) ::yes::

Some people just can't let things go, LOL! ::yes::

:rotfl:  :p lol nope sometimes people cant let things go!!!

Hey you gave me the eye roll and the "whatever". The fact still remains, you abused a customer service policy to get something for a sale price when it wasn't on sale. Its a very good policy that the customer is always right, but in this instance you abused it. And had the gall to complain about it.

By posting this, you are encouraging others to follow the same behavior, driving up costs to the rest of us to cover losses on items that aren't on sale.

I totally disagree. It is the STORE'S job to make it as easy as possible for the customer. If they are going to post a sale sign, it's the STORE'S job to make sure anything under it is included in the sale. Customers should NOT have to do any sort of detective work. Everything should be SIMPLE.
