Milk!!

4.18 a gallon for non organic milk.A deli used to have coupons in the local saver paper for 2.89 galoln of milk, then the coupon changed to 50 censt off a gallon. Today they have no milk coupons at all. Thier milk is still 20 cents cheaper than the supermarket. My kids want chocolate milk every morning and my 3 yo wants milk all day long now.

In PA the price of milk is regulated by the state. They are not allowed to put it on sale. So no loss leader pricing for us. Both my kiddos (and me) are lactose intollerant and that used to be 2x the price of regular milk for me, but looking at these prices not so anymore. I have no idea what regular milk costs, we don't drink any!

A gallon of skim at the grocery store I shop at generally hovers around $2.69 a gallon... but if we have to buy it when we're not in town it can be a lot closer to $4. :sad2:

Can't wait until CostCo opens up! When I lived outside of Chicago, CostCo was actually closer to my house than the regular grocery store, and I would often stop in there for just a gallon of milk. Granted, that was several years ago, and I would have been annoyed if it was more than 2 bucks a gallon...

Powered milk kinda scares me, but I think I may get some for baking and cooking purposes.... I have a feeling it wouldn't go over well for drinking in our house, though.

Well I am glad that I am not the only one!!

rparmfamily, WOW, even such high prices at the commissary, what a rip! I had heard that it was expensive over there. I hope that your COLA accounts for it.

Oh yes, COLA does make up for it. Except that our COLA has been decreasing since last fall (same for European bases for some reason too) and of course everything has gotten more expensive.

Our local dairy has a deliveryman. I get a delivery once a week. They only have the select hormone free milk. He has cheese and strawberry and chocolate milk. Last week I got a dozen eggs, 3 gallons of milk, 1 gallon flavored, bagels and bread, sour cream, cottage cheese and some ice cream he had on special (fudge bars and strawberry half gallon) and it was $25. The only bad part is some things are market price so you don't always know what it is going to be, and sometimes he is out of certain things by the time he gets to you. But they have loss leaders too, so I stock up on those. When I was checking out milkmen, they had several dairies here that delivered. They might actually make more money than if it goes to a store, I don't know.

Luckily we don't seem to be hit too hard by milk and egg prices. My local store has regular milk for $2.55/gallon (actually down $0.10 this week) and Organic Valley for $6.50/gallon.

Eggs are $2.25/dozen for the cage free/Omega 3 kind here. It's not bad at all.

I live in America's Dairyland, but I pay $3.46 for a gal. of skim milk. It is very expensive in this area. Some parts of WI are alot cheaper!:confused3

When we lived in Australia (dh was stationed in Alice Springs), we didn't even have a commissary. Our grocery bill was VERY high, partly because prices were generally more expensive over there, partly because we lived in a VERY remote location and we couldn't use coupons. Thankfully COLA was pretty good so that helped. But, it's nice to be living near a commissary again (and one that doesn't have the prices that yours does!).

I buy it at costco for $3.55 a gallon for skim milk. eggs are pricey also I buy them at costco also..

I thought it was just me with the high price and thiirsty for milk family. We don't have a freezer in our garage so i can't freeze it and we only have room for about 3 gallons at a time in our fridge. I am not sure the exact price I pay for milk but I know we get the 2 for deal. It used to be 2 for 4 something, not sure what it is up to now.

I go once a week and buy 5+ gallons at Sam's Club. It is about $1 cheaper per gallon than at our grocery stores.

I have heard that milk is suppose to go down about $.20 but who knows.

Ditto. Also, the CVS here is generally almost a dollar cheaper than the supermarket. Considering we go through three gallons a week, at 52 weeks a year, I figure I save $156 going to Sam's, $126 when you take out the membership fee.

I am :scared1: at the prices some of you are paying! I just looked at the Meijer ad for this week and milk is on sale for $2.77/gal. I believe the normal price is $2.92. When I have to buy 5 gallons a week, that really adds up!

Wow! Our sale price for milk is $3.79 if we are lucky, usually $3.99 though! And not on sale all that often. We didn't like the costco milk, especially the container, for the minimal savings we decided to go with something we liked.

CVS everyday price is $4.99!

We do too, and the cost is insane. DH is convinced that not only can he taste a difference between conventional and organic, but he can taste a difference between organic brands:confused3 If I shop, I buy whatever organic milk I can get the cheapest that week. We go through 3-4 gallons a week. If DH shops, he comes home with $$$Horizon$$$ brand no matter what:eek: It drives me crazy because it's usually much more $$ than organic store brand or whatever brand is on sale.

Tell your DH Heritage is way better that Horizon any day! ;)

Is organic and hormone free the same? How much is Braum's?

Nope, not the same.
Can't answer your question about Braum's though.

Organic food products cost more than conventionally produced ones, mostly because their producers are smaller, the work is more labor-intensive, and the requirements for food certified as organic are very high and very regulated.

Personally I'd be very cautious when it comes to paying more for "hormone free" milk. There are complaints in several states about misleading "hormone free" labels (which some are calling "organic lite" labels) You could very well be paying a lot more for milk that is neither organic nor hormone free.

It's sad that you have to research the heck out of everything you buy to get the whole story... but true.

How about ice cream?

I was really craving ice cream last night and went to Safeway. Cheapo ice cream (which I don't like, was on sale for $3 for 1.75 quarts (so they are packaging smaller than they used to.)

Good ice cream (Dreyers, Breyers, Safeway select was pushing $6!!

We can thank Washington for this. In addition to high fuel prices, which increases the cost of getting goods to market, they are subsidizing corn production for ethanol. This makes is very expensive for feed for dairy cows. I also saw a news item that wheat prices are expected to go up dramitically as farmers grow less and less wheat and more corn because corn is subsidized. There is now a worldwide wheat shortage because American farmers are switching crops. Hello to $4 loaves of bread, $5 gallon milk, 4 gallon gas, $6 lb for cheese...

Congress really needs to get out of the subsidizing of crops. When farmers choose to cut cut back on growing things that we can put in our stomachs to grow things we can put in our gas tank, we have gone too far. Ethanol isn't the answer if it increases our food costs by 100 %!!!

Went to Coscto today and picked up 5 gallons. Regular milk is down to $3.05:cool1: :cool1:

I paid $3.34 for Edy's yesterday. There were several other name brands on sale, too. Last week Breyer's was 2/$5.

This is at a Kroger's in central Kentucky.

Milk is $2.79/gallon. Chocolate milk is up to $4.35/gallon. Not sure about eggs. They went way up after the holidays.

At our local shaws it's 3.99/gallon. I can get it for about $3.50 at Walmart though. My BJ's ran out and I just have renewed yet so I am not sure what that is.

I know Claremont or Warner is a hike, but milk is $2.89/gallon, Half-half 1.39 quart, and butter is still 1.99/lb.. Cheaper than Walmart!! I bake for a living and I use Heay cream alot. it's 2.79 a quart at MB, 3.09 a PINT at shaws!

My kids drink soy milk... it's gone up quite a bit in cost lately also. A half-gallon of soy milk is up to $2.89 or I can buy a two-pack for $5.89. Occasionally, I find soy milk at 2 half-gallons for $5 and when I do, I stock up.

DH drinks Lactaid milk and the prices for that are similar to what I pay for soy milk. I've learned to keep and eye out for sales and stock up.

I used to buy regular Fat Free Milk for me, but it was costing so much and I would rarely drink all of it before it went bad, that I recently stopped buying the FF milk and will just drink some of DH's Lactaid milk when I want some.
