Milk Buying Tip

A couple of interesting tidbits...

Humans are the only mammals that continue to drink milk after being weaned from their mothers during infancy. Humans are also the only animals that consume milk from another species.

Drinking milk is a totally acquired need. Their are no nutrients in milk that can not be gotten from other sources fairly easily (and possibly healthier). Funny how many of us feel it is such a vital part of our diet.

And yes, I do drink milk :D .

sorry not trying to be difficult but what the heck are you talking about lucki_bunni

swollen infected utters. Research what you are talking about besides one example of some left wing propaganda you watched. I come from a family of many dairy farmers. I don't think you realize how ridiculus you sound.
I nursed two children and had mastitis with my first dd. Mastitis is the medical term for the infection you are talking about. A cow much like a women will get so sore with this infection they will not be able to stand it much less get milked all day. It is painful. Do you not think they test the milk for bacteria and antibotics???

Maybe you should read the article I have linked from the New York Times. Horizone has 70% of the organic market according to this guy. After reading that article they didn't sound like happy cows to me. Our cows sound like they get treated and live better. I'm not saying organic can't be a good thing. It's just that some people think organic means better. I happen to think you need to see more than just peta or someone else telling you you have to eat this way or that way. The big congolomerates are hopping on the organic band wagon too. Organic doesnt mean better. The milk is ultra pasturized so they can ship it further away not to give you a longer time to drink it.

When I asked a local dairyman about this (we still have one or two in town) he said that the chief reason to ultrapasteurize -- a high-heat process that "kills the milk," destroying its enzymes and many of its vitamins -- is so you can sell milk over long distances. Arguably, ultrapasteurized organic milk is less nutritious than conventionally pasteurized conventional milk. This dairyman also bent my ear about Horizon's "factory farms" out West, where thousands of cows that never encounter a blade of grass spend their days confined to a fenced dry lot, eating (certified organic) grain and tethered to milking machines three times a day. So maybe Organic Cow milk isn't quite as legible a product as I thought.

This is exactly why I don't push the milk. I just don't think it's that good for you. If you eat green veggies and other veggies and some kinds of fruit, you should be getting enough.

I have also read that cheese is better for you than milk.......something about the way it's processed, the enzymes or something, I can't remember.

And I have also read, countless times, how pasterization of milk is the worse thing for it. Ofcourse, packaging it and selling it to thousands is the problem, I guess.(how else would some people get it). The best way to have milk is like how we use to drink it.........raw......straight from the cow, like on the Walton's.:teeth: No antibiotics, no hormones, no pasturization. But being that I don't know a dairy farmer who sells raw milk...........:D

Our family of 5 only uses a gallon or so a week.

OK - I'm not going to jump on the organic vs non-organic milk debate . . . suffice it to say that we do drink milk & we vacationed on a working dairy farm bed & breakfast the past 2 summers, so I got a first hand look at what goes on (at least at this one farm).

Any way, I do have a question for the poster who talked about freezing milk. How do you thaw it - sit it in the refrigerator overnight? I'm curious as to how long it might take to thaw & how quickly you have to use it once it has been thawed.

That's what we do--we do Organic Valley--or if I get to Wild Oats, their brand b/c it costs less. We discovered LONG ago that we waste milk. But once you open it, it's only good for 7 days of course.

We also by cage free hens, and chicken--and I buy hubby the maverick beef....if you gotta eat the cow or chicken or their products--I think they should at least be happy, just before the slaughter!!!

Happy cows, happy chickens--keeps me guilt free!

EDITED TO ADD: I hate milk--I don't consume milk products (except the occasional cheese). My kids drink it b/c they like it--but we don't require the 2 or 3 glasses daily.

Can anyone recommmend a good calcium chewable? (for the kids)
