Milk Buying Tip

I just had a quick tip for everyone. We were having a problem for a while with throwing a lot of milk away because we didn't use it before expiration. On average, I'd say we consume 1/2 gal. every 2 weeks. Sometimes less, sometime more. Well, I recently began buying Horizon Organic milk and discovered that the expiration is way longer than regular milk. I have no idea why, but instead of 1-2 weeks, it's good for a month or more.

The point, if you're constantly throwing out expired milk, try organic because it lasts at least twice as long!

Wow, ½-gallon every 2 weeks!!! We go thru a gallon every 2 to 3 days! No problem with expired milk here! On the other hand, a dozen eggs can last for a month in this house.

We also go through the milk!! Even if it just my DD's drinking it....We buy a gallon every 4 days!! They drink it with everything.....(especially those special treats of Oreo cookies!!)

What does Organic Milk taste like?

It tastes just like regular really fresh milk!.............P

We drink a gallon a day around here.

You can freeze your milk, also. Purchase a 2 qt Rubbermaid container with a tight seal, fill with milk and freeze. When you are ready for it, just thaw, shake it well and drink!

Lol! It tastes like Milk!!! Actually, I've been drinking the organic stuff for so many years, I can't stand the taste of regular milk anymore.. but then, this might just be the OCD in me. I refused to knowingly drink regular milk after I found out what's in it. (..and if you don't plan to switch to the higher price organic, or stop drinking milk all together.. I don't reccomend you go looking for what is in regular milk..)

Aside from being organic, horizon and other's (mostly organic milk producers, though) ultra-pasteurize (as opposed to just 'pasteurized'..) they do it at a higher temperature, for a shorter period of time, so that they don't have to add any preservatives. Hence the longer shelf life.

I started using ultra pasturized milk some time ago because of the same problem. The darn stuff would go bad on the exact expiration date which was only a week away.
With the ultra pasturized milk (I don't buy the organic milk), I can buy more than one half gallon of milk and always have it around because it lasts for so long.
And I found the cheapest place around here to buy milk is at the CVS drugstore. It's more than 50 cents cheaper than any grocery store.

Double check the fine print. I buy lactaid milk which has a long expiration date on it. However, in small print it says it is only good for one week after it has been opened.

heathrow 42 I would love to know what you found to be in milk???

since milk is mostly water? what is the part that grossed you out so

I started buying organic milk for my family after educating myself on what's in regular milk, too, i.e. antibiotics (that they give the cows), pesticides (on what they feed the cows) and growth bovine hormones. My kids won't even drink "regular" milk anymore because it tastes different. It tastes awful to me. I guess I'm used to the organic milk now, too. It tastes really good. It's expensive though!! I could buy 1 1/2 gallons of regular milk for the same price as a 1/2 gallon of organic. That really adds up!! :(

We use organic milk too. I buy it because it does not have antibiotics or bovine growth hormone residues (which I've read increase breast cancer rates in humans) and the long expiration date is just an extra bonus. It is more expensive but very worth it.

I guess you don't eat meat, cheese, or eggs either huh
all of that stuff would be found in there too

Organic, cage free, GMO free, the cleaner the better if Europeans and British folks They even have mad cow !) don't have to have this stuff in their food I don't want it either...
too many folks in my family tree have died of cancer...I need all the help I can get.

Don't forget the pus! That was also found in regular milk from cows that had infections. Yuck!

Besides the longer life, I also switched to organic because of all the junk in regular milk and how cows are treated at normal dairies. I watched the documentary Corporation recently, about all the evil deeds of corporations, and it had a lengthy segment about the milk industry. There is all kinds of things in regular U.S. milk that shouldn't be there, and isn't in other countries. It was gross, and really sad to see cows suffering in diesese with swollen, infected utters from the hormones.

I tell everyone now that you make a cow happier by buying organic.

With a baby in the house and a husband addicted to cereal . . . milk doesn't last long! LOL

I never considered organic milk. Now you all have me thinking :flower1:

We mostly eat game meat, buffalo, and cage-free eggs but we still eat regular cheese. Yes we still buy burger. I just figure some improvements are better than none.

To everyone who commented about the expense of organic.. I have no idea how much it is.. but I noticed our local costco started carrying 3 packs (1/2 gal) of organic milk :) It's gotta be cheaper than your local grocery..

everyone else pretty much covered all the icky stuff in milk I had read about. While we mostly eat organic meats and cheeses when we can, for me, not drinking regular milk was a direct result of reading about what was in it. The hormones and antibiotics, were the reason I preferred organic at first, the bleeding sore udders and pus, and the fact that is acceptable to have a percentage of pus and blood in milk (thus making it acceptable to let your cows have sore bleeding udders) is pretty much what made me decide that I would not knowingly drink nonorganic milk. I am sure if read all about how chickens or countless other things about my food, I would probably decide not to eat them.. however, after the milk thing, I am willingly choosing the option of ignorance is bliss, but with caution (lol) by eating organic every chance I get.

Well, I try to buy range free chicken and other organically raised meats or try to eat more vegetarian anyway, organic eggs, and there's also cheeses that don't have that junk in them.

There's a lot of organic stuff out there.

I don't buy organic produce, though. I try to grow my own and I just buy the regular produce and wash them with soap and water. I read a Consumer Reports article and I believe this reduces the chance of having pesticide residue by 90%.

Yes, some improvements are better than none. :D

Me TOO! I wondered why this thread had gotten to the length that it had, clicked on the last page, read PART of Heather's post, skipped MOST of it, and choose to remain ignorant on this... :earseek: Blech!!!
