My DH is not only a proud member of the US Air Force, but also a little cheap. He would like to wear his military mess dress (the Air Force equivalent of a tux) for formal night rather than renting a tux. Would that be acceptable? Has anyone else ever done this or see this?

I am sure someone was wearing military dress when we were on our cruise.

I think it looks really smart, and I am sure he would be the centre of attention.

I have seen others onboard in dress military formals. Just be perpared for all the head turning. There is nothing more impressive than a man in his dress military formals.

I say go for it!

Sue

I too think that is a GREAT idea! He'll probably get commended all over the place.

What a great way to dress up, show pride for our country, and be the envy of many!

Absolutely, it is totally appropriate and very impressive.....he might outshine the captain (hee hee).

I am a Commander in the Navy (retired) and have worn my Dress White Uniform for both the cruises I have gone on.

It looks almost like the dress whites the crew ship's officers wear, but the ribbons and wings make the difference( I don't wear my medals. It seems a bit too pretensious for a fun cruise to me).

My cover with the "scrambled eggs" on the visor and my stars on the shoulder boards set it apart also.

Tell him to go ahead. It's a great conversation starter, and a way to meet some comrades in the force.

Another thought from an over protective Army Mom ....

Yes, I have seen this done many times in lieu of a tux. The military uniforms make an excellent presentation, however, unfortunately our world is at turmoil. Please be sure he goes through proper chain of command before wearing his uniform out of country. Our son, US Army, is very conscious about where he wears his uniform, therefore did not wear on cruise.

God Bless and thank your hubbie for his service,
~ Sandie

We saw several people in uniform on our cruise. It used to be encouraged, from what people have told my dh (he's in the reserves and can't wear a uniform unless he's activated-- and he's afraid to ruin his whites anyway), but I'm not sure now. I know they're not supposed to wear uniforms in port when they make port calls, even in the US, but a cruise might be different.

I have to say (apologies to dh) that the sharpest looking man on the cruise was the Marine sergeant in his full dress uniform.

nothing beats a man in uniform.........he will be the sharpest dressed man aboard! and tell him we said thank you for proudly serving the USA!!:)

I think a service man or woman in dress uniform is a wonderful sight! if he gets the ok to wear it then by all means. You'll get some wonderful pictures and lots of great attention!

I'm also a little cheap. Has anyone ever seen someone wearing a fire department Class A uniform? I don't know if I'll really do it because it seems it would be easier to rent and have it delivered to the ship than carrying my uniform in much needed luggage space.

Mike

Thanks for all the great responses. DH will be happy to hear that it is OK. Fortunately we will be driving down so we will have plenty of room for the garment bag in the van. DD will also get a kick out of getting to put her pretty dress in the bag with dad’s uniform!

On our recent cruise...I saw several military uniforms on formal night and these men and also two women...looked absolutely incredible....

I'd go for it.....

We're going on a 4-night, so no formal night. A few months ago I asked opinions on this board about DH wearing dinner dress uniform to Palo since we'd like to have our own personal formal night (I have a closet full of ballgowns I've worn once!).

The reply from the people here was a resounding "yes!"
I'd say go for it, but then again I'm a sucker for a man in uniform!

The only annoying thing is packing the hat!

Thank you to your husand for what he has chosen to do with his life & to you for helping to make it happen!

I saw several dress military uniforms on our cruise and they looked the best!! God bless your husband for helping to protect our country!

I've seen both military and firefighters wear their mess dress on board - and I think they look sharper than any tux.

But I'm a little biased...I even had my father wear his Air Force mess dress to walk me down the aisle!

Unfortuantely, the majority of my husbands uniforms are camoflage and not quite as formal...;)

My husband is an Officer int he USN... adn we were thinking of bringing his Mess Dress as well, but we are on the 3 night land and 4 night cruise,we werent sure if there was anytime that may require him to wear it? What do you think?

As a proud Marine mom and proud Marine mother-in-law, I would expect my sons to wear their dress blues for formal nights.

I've done a good bit of flying in the last few months and military travellers are well received and respected as of late. I would believe the same would happen aboard the ship.

Besides, military families are not the most well-off financially. Save the expense of tuxes and suits and wear those dress uniforms!

First of all, thanks for your DH's service to our country and a special thanks to you and your kids for the sacrifice you make
supporting him. Military families are really extraordinary people.
I for one would be honored to share dinner with a military family and someone in uniform would make the formal evening even more terrific. Tell your DH to wear his uniform proudly. I am sure he will be the center of attention.
