Miley Cyrus... why?

To me it's obscene and suggestive given the fact that she is a 15 year old kid. Other posters see this as being a completely innocent and precious picture, but I do not share that view. Who knows, maybe it's just me?

I don't go "quite" that far. But my concern is this - and it really has nothing to do with Miley Cyrus, it could be anybody - is that we are encouraging people to look at young girls in a sexual way. If this becomes acceptable, then the next thing you know, something a little "worse" will become acceptable, and so on....

I don't really think that it's such a seductive photo. I think it's a raw honest portrait of her. I don't think she's giving "bedroom eyes" this could totally be me :confused3 but when you looked at the photo did you really look at it or see skin and say WHOA that's tasteless and I think she's a trollop!

I think it's a pretty grown up picture in a grown up magazine. She's probably a lot more grown up than your average 15 year old, and who at 15 didn't want to be grown?!

that just goes to show how desensitized(spelling?) this country is to all things of a sexual nature!

See, I could say that it goes to show how OVER sensitive some can be. ;) Look at the vintage shots of long long ago-- there were LOTS of shots of this sort way before now. ;) This is nothing new.

Bingo! :thumbsup2

As I said earlier it doesn't matter to me so much that it's Miley Cyrus; it could be the kid who works at the Pizza Hut next door. The problem is the normalization.

Wow, this thread has really grown, I assumed it would though...

I have to say that although I stick to the comments I made on page 2, I still think her parents should do a better job of protecting her, especially since she is in the public eye and incredibly popular right now. Not to mention, we all know how some of the other well known disney actresses/singers have gone... :rolleyes1

My problem is more with the manner of the pose, which is really not appropriate for a 15 y/old girl... but then again who am I to judge, having been a teenage mother and all :lmao:

In any case, as always the media/american public is blowing this way out of proportion and of course I am just as guilty as everyone else feeding into it..

But come on parents, teach your kids that these stars are entertainers, not idols and more importantly they are people. Miley is a 15 yearold kid and she is going through all the same fears and insecurities that normal 15 yearolds go through, only she is doing it in the public eye where she can be critiqued and judged for everyone to see...

It's not what was shown but how it was shot. It is a very seductive pose! If I were to drap myself in a satin sheet that way and send it to my DH do you really think he would say "what it's just your back" ??? No he would think it was sexy/sensual and for anyone to not be able to see that just goes to show how desensitized(spelling?) this country is to all things of a sexual nature!

So you will not let a 15 year old daughter wear a bikini to the beach?
Wont let her wear any sexy prom dresses like there are now?

You will be fighting an uphill battle.

Well clearly the photo of her laying across her dad's lap baring her mid-riff is suggestive and looks like incest. We need that photo banned too.

{sarcasm off}

Actually, to be perfectly honest with you, I thought that one was freakier than the sheet one. "Daddy As Boyfriend" seems grossly inappropriate to me.

The sheet one...not the best choice for her, a bit more of an adult portrayal than she should be in right now. Her guardians (parents, PR guy, whomever) made a huge tactical error..or maybe they didn't...maybe they were hoping for exactly what is happening.

Teen idols have a limited shelf life, and any media star who's as omnipresent as Miley Cyrus risks overexposure (no pun intended). I think this is probably an attempt by Team Cyrus to use a respected photographer like Annie Leibovitz to broaden her appeal outside the teen set and help her eventually transition out of the Disney Channel era of her career.

IMHO the apology is window dressing and may even have been required by Disney.

Kiddie porn? Not remotely close--it does a disservice to that horrible crime and its victims to call the pics that.

Well said!:thumbsup2

Believe it or not, it's quite possible to raise a teenage daughter that can accept the concept of "modesty". We are fortunate enough to have a 16 year old daughter that's never had a desire to wear a bikini or a formal dress with plunging neck lines or backs... and we didn't have to cloister her in a religious school or home school here to do so. Believe it or not folks, you don't have to "give in".

I've seen more teen nudity on the posters at Abercrombie and Fitch in the Mall.

If you put that photo up in an Abercrombie and Fitch and didn't tell anyone it was Miley, nobody would think twice about it. Nobody would be up in arms over it.

I'm not saying it makes it right ... just saying that nobody complains when it's a not-so-famous teen model doing the same thing for A&F but change it to a mega-famous teen celeb and everyone's in an uproar.

FWIW I'm not too crazy about the A&F ads either.

I'm not either ... but you know as well as I do that you'd find the same thing hanging up at A&F and nobody would complain this loudly. A&F has been doing those types of ads for years and they continue to do so b/c nobody seems to speak out. But, put a teen celeb in a similar pose and all heck breaks loose.

I just looked up Abercrombie & Fitch Ads under google image search and found a pose w/a woman naked from the waist up w/her arm bent at the elbow and hand at her face covering her tata (although you could see the curve of the tata). There is not one piece of clothing in the photo and this poster was up in A&F stores. If you google it, you'll find it and see it is far more provocative than Miley's photos.

That truly depends on the cut of the bathing suit.

Wont let her wear any sexy prom dresses like there are now?
ABSOLUTELY NOT!

You will be fighting an uphill battle.

Thats okay...as a mother it's a battle I'm willing to fight. I'm the parent - I'll win. She might get mad at me - but she'll get over it.

Ummmm...Actually, plenty of people complain. A&F ads are often just soft porn. I won't spend one penny there. Never will.

I think Miley and her camp knew what they were doing and were looking to broaden her appeal and get a wider, more mature audience by making her seem more grownup and less squeaky clean. They did not anticipate the severe negative reaction, so now they are backpedalling as fast as they can to do damage control.

Yes, the photo has a sexual aspect. The only thing missing is her licking her lips. :rolleyes1 Okay....maybe a bear skin rug. :rotfl2:

I was thinking all it was missing was a lit cigarette!!! :lmao:

ITA!!!:thumbsup2 You can say "No" to your children. I do it all the time. Like you said, they may get mad, but they'll get over it.

I think it's a bit too suggestive for a 15 year old but the way people were going on about this, I thought she was actually showing something. The headlines are worse than the picture IMO because she is definitely not topless.

Bad choice on her and her guardian's part but this will likely blow over.
