Our game begins today and will run till Dec 31st.
The goal of the game is to give us all a little extra motivation to keep on going when the days are to cold or to hot and humid. A secondary goal is to encourage everyone to put in more time doing an activity that raises your heart rate and gets your body moving.
A lot of injuries are caused by an imbalance in our own body. Like a weak stomach causes back pain or muscles that are to tight can cause all sorts of leg pain. So everyone is encouraged to do a good stretching routine, there are a lot of fitness tapes that help you work and stretch all your parts. Even better if you can is to sign up for a yoga, aerobics, step ect... class. It is easier to keep doing it with a group. Just like this competition.
Life gets in the way of our best intentions. So any activity you do that is strenous and gets your heart rate up there counts on the hours. You northern folks know that an hour of snow shoveling is a workout. Just like mowing your yard with a push mower on a hot day is a struggle. Ideally everyone can do the running/walking, playing sports or doing classes but I'm not restricting it to that since some of our stay at home moms may have a hard time getting out, especially bad weather.
Everyone is encouraged to play a sport if there are teams in your area, like our Canadian friends play hockey. Ice skateing, roller blading or biking are fun activities that you can do alone with your spouse or a group. A lot of work places have sports teams also. Local running clubs often have monthly or weekly competitions.
Of course there is nothing wrong with just staying with your regular routine if it's working for you. But most of us do want to get to a new level of fitness. Often people who workout regularly but have trouble losing weight can see dramatic improvements when they add just a bit more, they have been right on the edge. For example adding weight training to your running or walking. Or adding swimming.
Each person will log their hours on the thread the captains start. The team captains will give you instructions on how to do this if you need them.
The captains will report the teams monthly miles/hours on the weekly spread sheet that will be linked to the weekly running walking club thread. Trash talking is encouraged, but please keep your pokes to teams and not individuals, I'm easily bruised so be gentle with me.
The captains can answer your questions or you can contact me directly with any questions.
This is a competition and some teams are going to be out to win. Everyone on a team needs to help everyone else stay motivated and as a team figure out a way to win. Every team has players of all fitness levels. I tried to make them as even that way as possible. The team that goes after it is going to be the team that wins in lots of ways. The winning team's players are going to be in a lot better shape by the end of the year.
Have fun, kick some fat cells and get stronger and faster.
