Our first Father-Trip son and first DVC trip beginning this Thursday might be cancelled due to my son being sick. We don't know as of now if we will be able to go. As I mentioned, this is our first DVC trip. We also have a December trip and April trip booked and have had to borrow some points to be able to do all three trips. Our use year is September. What are the cancellation policies and could I try to take points from this October stay and put them toward December or April and then bank some current year points? Thanks for your help!

Since you would be canceling within 30 days the points will go into holding. If you decide you have to cancel make certain you don't wait until the day of check in or you lose all your points.

Once the points are in holding they can only be used for ressies that are within 60 days. Technically in order to reallocate towards an existing ressie the same room would have to also be available for booking and you have to be within 60 days. You could possibly get a sympathetic CM that will allocate these towards you Dec. stay without requiring the open room but don't be surprised if you run into that little glitch.

Since the holding points will expire at the end of your UY I would try and use them by getting a reallocation or if necessary booking some other accommodation that allows you to use them. Then you can bank any bankable points into next year.

I hope your son feels better really really fast.:flower3:

While your question has been answered, I wanted to say I hope your son is feeling better soon, hopefully tonight!:flower3:

NOTE YOU HAVE TO CANCEL AT LEAST ONE DAY IN ADVANCE OR POINTS ARE FORFIET.

What you can do can also depend on what points were borrowed. If you cancel, those points (from the October trip) go into a holding account regardless. Those points can be used for a CHECK-IN date of no LATER than 12/12/09 (tomorrow it would be 12/13/09, etc.).

If your December stay is within that time frame and there are rooms available, you can book for those dates and cancel the corresponding dates of your December trip. Technically, when you cancel those rooms become available, but there is always the chance someone might snatch them unless they let you do it in one call.

If it is after 12/12, you just have to wait. The holding account points will stay until they expire at the end of your UY.

The points from the cancelled December room go back into the current use year. You can bank them, unless they were borrowed to begin with (or banked, but you only mentioned borrowing). If these were borrowed points, they stay in the current use year, which for you means they expire the last business day of August 2010.

If you can bank them, they need to be banked before May 1, 2010 (if my math is correct! You can book in months 1-8 of your use year).

I hope it works out! Remember, you can rent out points that you can't use on these boards! If all else fails, do that and use it for your dues!

One other rule - you cannot book and travel the last 4 months of your UY (May-August). You can book OR travel, but not both (e.g. can't book a trip in May for check-in in July).

I don't think that applies to DVC resorts, only to Disney Collection and other 'exchanges'...

You are correct - i was trying to make sure I had all the rules and grabbed that one in error! I'll edit my post.

"Rule of Four" is ONLY for:
The Disney Collection (excluding Disneyland® Resort Hotels in California), Concierge Collection and Adventurer Collection

Thanks for the information. I spoke with a CM today and she told me that I would be able to use them toward my December trip which begins on December 17. I have to cancel tomorrow (Wednesday) and would not be able to put those points toward the December trip until I am in the 60 day window. But she said I could just wait to do that. So it's a little different than what you have told me here. Of course, a different CM might tell me something else. I will certainly update you on whether we go and if we don't, I'll fill you in on what happens.

The good news is that my son does seem to be feeling better and has not had a fever since last night. A little more Pixie Dust :wizard: might just do the trick! :goodvibes

hoping your son feels better soon and that you get to enjoy your father/son trip. :wizard:

:cool1: Glad you are at least getting out of this awful damp, cold, snowy weather! Bring some sunshine back with you, please!
