I just got my DD11's dress code. She is not allowed to wear red or blue polo shirts because they are gang colors.:faint: I never thought that we had a gang problem. My DS14 attends a different middle school and they are not restricted by color. He never mentions gangs.

My DD can only wear black, orange, gray or white. Oh well, I guess this will make school shopping easier.

Our school keeps threatening dress code but still nothing.
Gang colors? where do you live?

My BIL is on a special gang force in the police dept. and that's not how gang members show their colors. I don't really think the kids would have a problem wearing a red or blue shirt. My DD's whole school would be suspended because our school colors are red and blue and for spirit day they always wear those colors.

What is it, a surfers gang? Dumb! I think sometimes school officials over react to this kind of thing but there must be a gang with those colors in your area. the police probably sent them a memo and they are just covering their behinds. You are right, school shopping made easier.

Greensboro

We are starting to see more Latino gangs.

Ok I know this is not funny but I am :rotfl2: because my kids are "latino" and I have 4 of them I suppose they could be considered a gang.

But really I have never seen gang members wearing polo shirts in gang colors to identify them. That is pretty funny to me too.

I am sorry you are having a gang problems but I don't see how how polo shirt colors is going to stop it.

As for gangs, one of DH's cousins is a police officer in Scranton and she has told us stories about gangs around here that are never published in the newspaper or discussed on the news. As far as the general population is concerned, there is no gang problem... however, in reality, there is an ever growing one.

Oops, just meant to send you a PM but ended up posting!!

We are having a problem with gang activity in our city - hope the police department can get a handle on it soon.

Most of our elementary and junior high schools here let them where white or one other color (usually schools color), But my son's jr high school has to be different! They have each grade wear a separate color. I was real ticked when I bought him white shirts two years ago, and found out he had to have blue! arg...
This year though he will be back to white for 9th grade. ;)

Geesh, they sure are being strict! We have no color restrictions in our schools luckily.

I wonder what they would if gangs in the area in some way used every color? It's a shame.

Wow! Way to get more than one year's use out of a shirt. NOT!

:rotfl:

That was what I thought -- not the colors but the polo shirt. Does your average gang member really wear polo shirts? I would have thought that was way too preppy.

The public schools here require polo shirts as part of the uniform; they can wear either white or pale blue polo shirts with khaki bottoms. It's my understanding that the kids who want to support gangs do it via their shoelaces in that environment. There is always some way of getting in that signal if you want to.

Our school (I'm a para educator) is going to a stricter dress code next year. Pants and skirts have to be either blue, black, or khaki. Shirts have to be plain colored and have a collar. Shirts must be tucked in at all times. Turtlenecks may be worn in the winter (who past second grade wears those, anymore?) and plain colored sweaters can be worn, but must rest at the waist or top of the hips. I think if it's going that strict, it would be just easier to do a uniform.

I am in Greensboro also and we do have gangs here. Even the smaller schools. I don't think changing the dress code is helping at all. It just seems silly to me. How does making everyone dress the same solve anything? Wouldn't it be better to teach these kids to be individuals and make good decisions?
At my daughter's school a boy was arrested for having a gun and drugs, but he sure looked nice in his SMOD. (That is what the Greensboro schools call the standard mode of dress)

I'm joining you in the Politically Incorrect boat. My Rodriguez cousins have long made jokes about there being enough of us to have our own gang. :lmao:

The older generation doesn't think we're funny.

Preppy kids... my DS and DD wear turtlenecks to school in the winter, or under sweaters to go out. They are 13 and 12, respectively.

It hasn't hit here yet, or has already gone out. No one here wears them.
Interesting.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is kind of funny. Well, it's not but it is, in a weird way.

I remember back in the late 80s one of my nieces was not allowed to wear anything with the tri-circle Mickey head or Mickey Mouse (although Minnie or any other Disney character was fine) because it was a 'gang symbol' for a local gang.
