I know this topic comes up in discussions a lot. But I'd really love to know if everyone believes that WDW is pricing out the middle class? Or...any other classes for that matter! If you feel like you're being or have been priced out, why specifically do you feel that way? Do you still go on trips to WDW? How have you compensated for their price increases? On the other hand, if you don't feel as though WDW is pricing people out, I'd love to hear your thoughts on that as well!

Getting real expensive. Still get our annual pass and stay off site a lot. I feel sorry for someone who goes for about 5 days and stays on site. That gets pretty expensive for a family.

Most everyone is priced out of something in life, not just a holiday to WDW.

I think that if you still want to go to WDW and price is becoming an issue, you either choose another holiday destination, shorten your trip, stay at cheaper resort or off-site or save for longer periods to afford the sort of WDW trip you want.

Such a good question OP.
While I don't exactly feel priced out.. ( we did several trips in 2016, totaling 21 nites on site) we did
Not renew our Fla res AP, we have No planned trips ( tho I'm itching to go lol) and I'm just not feeling the "Value" as much.
I'm always on the fence about the Value... the room prices for the mods/deluxe seem high... ( until I remember I paid almost $400/nite for key west in a comparable value.. maybe moderate type room)
I just feel like the buses should be more frequent resort to park and park to park (and I don't want to be UPcharged for that)
The Overplanning it takes to get FP, get in a restaurant... especially a popular one...and Despite the daily cost Still not get on rides due to ridiculously long lines sometimes.
the Deluxe room rates are just Not comparable to Real Deluxe Amenity hotel rooms across the US, never mind outside it.
Sooo, while I don't feel we Can't afford it... I'm not sure the Value is worth our money any more.

And Middle class? What would that actually Be anymore? What financials does that encompass? Maybe that's the first thing we d need to agree upon. ?? I'm glad the dh isn't reading this thread, lol.
3/17.. HAPPY ST PATRICKS DAY!
Well... my "itch" got to me, I booked a return visit, my ds said I'm just Addicted, the dh just shakes his head.. neither thrilled with heading back..and I just wanna be there lol
So march n June planned...
oh well, Value? What's that!?

Don't feel sorry for me, I don't need any sympathy about what I spend on our WDW vacations. Its not like anyone is forced to go, its not the only vacation destination out there. People that go, go because they are perfectly willing to pay the price to go. :)

The cost to go to disney for a family of 4 has become ridiculous. Our last trip was around 7,000 for a week. Some of that was paid by the ebay/target/ebucks loophole so the actual cost was more like $4,000. I realize there are ways to do disney cheaper but staying at all star hotels and eating fast food every meal isn't my cup of tea. (No offense to anyone who chooses these options it's just now how I like to travel) we did try to cut costs by doing a amazon prime delivery with soda, water & snacks. That probably saved us at least $200.

We truly enjoy disney and will absolutely go back again in a couple of years but there are some really awesome places we could visit for a $7,000 price tag.

We talked about getting annual passes for our next trip and doing disney twice in 12 months (first trip in December then the second trip the following November) it would be roughly $400 per person per week. It's not a huge savings but not horrible either.

So true..

Seems like the prices just keep going up for everything Disney every year. It is only DH and myself, we go during free dining and usually book bounceback for the next year, stay at a value (only sleep in the room) and get park hoppers. For me to go to the Jersey shore for a week would be more expensive and offer me less. Is it expensive? Yes! DH is now retired so we will have to really consider if we can keep going every year may have to cut back our days.

It's hard to guage value at Disney because it's so unique. Is it expensive? Maybe. Compared to what?

Even with increases in recent years its more affordable than a lot of resort vacations. Park tickets are the only hard cost. Food and lodging can be cheap if you want them to be.

Overall I'd say its more accessible to middle class families than say, Hawaii or an all inclusive Caribbean resort.

I totally agree with @Beer Me . It's tough to compare a Disney vacation to pretty much any other destination. Also, like others have said, we'd have to figure out how to define "middle class". Where I grew up, my family would have been considered upper middle class. Where I live, now, my family would be considered firmly middle class at best. Finally, it can even be tough to define what being "priced out" means. Some people have mentioned here and in conversations like this in the past that they feel priced out because they can no longer go every year. Even though I currently DO go every year, I wouldn't consider not being able to "priced out". I don't think any vacation destination that includes as much as Disney does would be considered something most truly middle class families would be able to do every year without making some significant sacrifices.

On the other hand, I certainly see why people feel this way. Disney used to be more affordable for middle class families, there's no denying that. But it's also become more and more popular year after year, and even with tickets over $100 they hit capacity in the parks during the holidays. To be honest, I'm not sure there's any easy solution either way.

Edit: As far as how I compensate for the price increases, I do a few things. We have never had cable, don't go out to eat much, I make a lot of things myself (such as laundry detergent), and I am learning to can food. Most of this is things I'd do anyways because of my lifestyle, but they have the added benefit of helping me save a lot of money, which helps me save for Disney. I also use a LOT of coupons and I always use my credit cards and pay them off each month to get rewards, and I try to maximize these rewards by paying attention to cashback categories.

My family and I live in an area that's pretty well-visited by tourists ourselves, so we can appreciate the finer qualities of that literal "Magical Kingdom" out-of-Reality "bubble" feeling ... and are happy to pay it! Within reason... though we are still new and enchanted so we have low expectations and experience with the Mouse House as a corporate entity.

Pay the same prices to go on a stay-cation and deal with grouchy waitstaff with Real Life Drama and the fun times of local traffic....???? *shudder*

or go to Disney, where all the Cast Members really just want you to have a Great Day! We actually started having so much more fun giving Cast Compliments and thanking everyone for their part in the magic. Who can possibly get cumbersomely worried about Reality when you are eating cotton candy in the rain at a crazy pace so it doesn't melt, while you wait to go on a rollercoaster ride? Um not me.

I am wishing upon a star that I will somehow not have to save up for two years to go again. Reality will likely say otherwise! With direct flight, hotel, park tickets, food, sundry travel expenses, a bit of alcohol... souvenirs... uhmmmm it's looking like a $8-10,000 vacation package and driving would certainly NOT be cheaper in my case...

I would say that budget is fairly realistic to accomplish for a family of up to 6, but you're really scrimping on something else to achieve that. We are a set of three so the value per person is definitely a bit skewed!

I'm middle class and I'm not priced out. It's just not worth it to me (i.e., the value isn't there). We used to stay at deluxes right after Thanksgiving for about $250/night and had 10-day no expiration hoppers so our tickets were $35/day.

This is how I feel too. We can afford to go and we are very much 'middle class' but the cost has risen so much in the last five years even that I am having more and more trouble justifying a week at WDW. My oldest graduates in 2018 and her request for a few years now has been to go for a grad trip (with her family) so we will go then. No other Disney trips on the horizon. Also, contemplating staying offsite for the first time.

Imo WDW isn't that much more expensive than other vacations we take. This year we are going to stay at a condo on the beach near St Petersburg for a week - plenty of relaxing beach time, a day at Legoland and a day at Universal to check out HP. We will do a few other activities too (Big Cat Rescue, maybe a pirate cruise, etc.). We will cook a little, but I'm big on eating out while on vacation so there will definitely be dinners out. All in all, it is coming out pretty close to what we spend for a week at WDW. (We tend to stay at the value resorts though, maybe a mod if a good sale.)
We usually do a vaca to FL or CA in April...looking fwd to it gets me throught the New England winter. It usually ends up around the same cost when all is said and done whether we did Disney or other attractions. Then, we generally do a cheaper vacation to the white Mountains in NH in the summer, but the savings there is mainly bc we can drive there and the tiny amusement parks there are cheaper (Santa's Village and Story land about $35 per person/day...but, they are no disney, that is for sure).

Didn't prices only go up 3%? I would hope most people got at least that for a raise since that's about what is considered a cost of living raise. I do think a lot of people go all out at Disney and live the luxury life with out having the luxury money to back it. Sure it is fine to save up and do that once if you are going to only ever go once but Deluxe, TS every night, extras on top of extra, etc every single trip is not meant for the "average" family. I think with Disney people forget their realistic budgets and buy the magic they think the need instead of letting the experience speak for itself.

I valued out in 2013, but I am holding 1 day no-expiration MK passes...and now, if I didn't have them, I'd never find the value at going back under current ticket prices. 4 days for 6 people for $2400 in tickets only...there is no theme park in the world worth that much to me and my family for only 4 days of visits...

Knowing I got 2 days at a major theme park Christmas town in 2016 for $32/person or $192 total for the family...the value isn't even close.

Maybe when it was all brand new back in the 90's (I've been going since 1984 as a little kid until 2012), but no way now for what's there now - 20 year old tech is what I can get anywhere...
