Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Parade will be different this year
posted by Kristin Ford on Jul 17, 2007 8:12:03 PM

Tickets went on sale in May for the popular Magic Kingdom event, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. But recently I noticed on the passholder Web site that one of the old standbys is going to be different this year.

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Parade apparently is being replaced with Mickey's Once Upon A Christmastime Parade. Are everyone’s favorite toy soldiers going AWOL? And what about the roller-skating snowflakes and the dancing reindeer? Say it isn’t so!

We can only assume the parade will be based on the 1999 DVD of the same name. It contains three stories: "Donald Duck: Stuck on Christmas," "A Very Goofy Christmas" and "Mickey & Minnie's Gift Of The Magi." And there was a sequel, Mickey's Twice Upon A Christmas, in 2004 in which Mickey and pals are animated. The stories include: "Belles on Ice," "Christmas: Impossible," "Christmas Maximus," "Donald's Gift" and "Mickey's Dog-Gone Christmas."

As much as these DVDs have become "classics" in our home during the holidays, I’ll be sad to see the parade change. For my family, viewing it has become an annual tradition. What would be fantastic is if our friends at Disney have decided to add this parade to the night’s lineup and not use it as a substitute. I'm sure that two distinct Christmas parades would be a gift to many Disney fans.

The passholder site also lists a new castle light show for the upcoming season. Cinderella Castle will be adorned with thousands of shimmering white lights that will be turned on during a nightly ceremony with Cinderella, Mickey, Minnie and the gang.

Other mainstays, such as the "Holiday Wishes" fireworks, "Celebrate the Season" castle stage show, "Twas the Night Before Christmas" stage show in Tomorrowland, characters dressed in their Christmas finery, snow on Main Street, and cookies and cocoa apparently will remain part of the party.

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party will be from 7 p.m. to midnight Nov. 12, 15, 16, 25, 27, 29, 30 and Dec. 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, 14, 16, 18, 20, 21. Tickets at the gate cost $51.07 for ages 10 and older and $43.62 for ages 3-9. The advance purchase prices for select nights are $43.62 for adults and $36.16 for children. I do believe it is time for a new parade. Of course, it simply could be much of the same parade with only a new title and music.

Sounds like the same thing they did with 3o'clock main street parade. Took away the snow-globes and kept every thing the same except changed the name.:confused3

As a newbie to the MVMCP, I'll be thrilled no matter what the parade is. It's CHRISTMAS, after all :)

I'm sure these kinds of changes are disappointing to those who want to see the same thing year after year, but there really are some of us who are seeing it for the first time, and are looking forward to it!

Thank you! I was thinking the same thing. I don't care if it's different than it was last year. Either way it will be new and great to me :woohoo:

Oh no! Please don't take away the toy soldiers!

I love the movies but I love the old parade too. I think its a good idea but if they do it I'll miss the old parade, even though I only saw it once. I'm sure though that no matter what they do it will be magical.

They won't! This was posted on the Orlando Sentinel's blog as a follow-up....

Toy soldiers march on

The toy soldiers have survived another year! And so have their peers, the roller-skating snowflakes and the dancing reindeer. I'm told they all still will appear in Disney's holiday parade.

Mickey's Once Upon a Christmastime Parade will showcase a series of holiday themes that are not based on the DVD of the same name, as I’d guessed. Instead, the vignettes include a friends and family Christmastime party, a sleigh ride through a winter wonderland, a romantic fairy tale Christmastime, a scrumptious display of Christmastime sweets, and Santa and Mrs. Claus in a grand finale. The parade will feature original music plus classic and current holiday tunes.
