Mickey's So Long Summer Cruise 2.0

Just got back from returning my oldest DD to college on Sunday Night. She came home because she had a dentist appointment and to get her nails done:rolleyes:

Spring break is in two weeks and we will have to get her again just so she can come home, hang out in her room and with her friends:confused3

Anywho, with those trips the auto train to Florida is looking pretty attractive about now:thumbsup2

I looked it up, talked to a friend who has done it several times and I might book it before the end of the week.

Tell me more about the auto train...where does it start? How much is it- how long does it take... May be something to think about

Where are you hiding, blue diamond lady:confused3

We all know that there is absolutely nothing of importance going on in the world....what's going on??:surfweb:

From what I have learned, the auto train leaves at 4:00 p.m. each day from Lorton, VA (Washington, DC). If you have a large vehicle like a full size SUV you have to be there 2 hours early. If you have a car you have to arrive 1 hour early.

When you arrive, they take your car like you are returning your vehicle at a Car Rental place and then you check in. They will call for boarding and you will be on your way:thumbsup2

Dinner will be served at the time that you have selected. They are supposed to have a car where the kids can watch movies. They have sleeper cars or coach cars.

The seats recline like lazyboy chairs and there are outlets to plug in laptops and games. Seats are assigned so the family will sit together.

There is only one stop Sanford, FL arriving at 9:30 a.m. which is 30-45 minutes from Orlando.

For five people with a oversized vehicle in coach is around $1,100.00:)

DH and I were also talking about possibly doing the AutoTrain. I did read somewhere that the sooner you book the better your price. I hope that doesn't mean the price is going to increase.

I'm here. Been working my butt off in NYC to pay for my Disney habit.

In the past I've paid $50 pp on DCL for fuel surcharges, sucked!

Let's talk about this auto train...I'm a Platinum/Select Plus Memeber on Amtrak, meaning I travel over 10,000 miles a year. I want to issue some words of caution and advice. When Amtrak runs on schedule it's great, minus the dirty bathrooms, cranky passengers, etc.

I spend hours in Amtrak's President's Club listening to delays and announcements. Amtrak has a lousy on-time record because there's no oversight. Plan to give yourself plenty of time to get to FL.

I've rode Amtrak Coach, Business Class and in sleeper cars. Coach has the reclining seats. There's no way in hell I could sit in one of those seats from VA to FL. They're bigger than an airline seat, only one armrest and only some cars have footrests. The roomettes are two reclining seats that face each other in a glorified closet. Think double door sliding closet with a window and two coach seats facing each other. Yes, your knees will rub together. The sleeper/bedrooms would be my only option. There's a couch similar to a ship sofa that becomes a bed, above it is a berth. Each room has a sink, mirror, pull down chair and a bathroom closet. Inside the closet is a toilet and shower head. You let the water run over the toilet, odd. The sleepers have huge windows to enjoy the view with sliding glass doors to the hallway. The halls are hysterical, sook narrow. Sleepers come with a porter, think stateroom host. They bring you towels, dinner reservations, etc.

The cafe cars are acceptable. Food is "prepared" on the train. There's sit down dining with waiters or a counter service and snacks Food is expensive!

Some trains have a viewing car, a glass dome with comfy chairs for people to sit and enjoy. The movies are shown on an LCD 42" screen.

Ultimately, would I take the auto train? Depends on airfare, do we need a car? It is fun, the kids would enjoy it, but Amtrak is not run like an airline, service is a hit or big miss.

I have so many rail points accumulated we could travel in a roomette for free, but decided to fly.

Keep an eye on the price!!! Amtrak is very savvy when it comes to tickets, the earlier you book the better!!! Comb the website for discounts, they're great at hiding them!!

I just jumped on Amtrak.com. Um, it's a lot more expensive than flying!!! A vehicle costs $363. Are you guys sure you priced it right? I priced a super liner room, 2 adults, 1 child with our AAA discount and an SUV, it was $1500!!! I only paid $973 for airfare.

If you are considering Amtrak I recommend AAA membership to save 10%.

For Coach it was $1,133.00 for 3 Adults and 2 Children and dinner is included.

For airfare out of PHL right now is around $2,000.00.

My Friend claims that the upper coach seats were comfortable but not plush. Definitely better than driving 16+ hours in a car:)

I am not comparing flying with the train. On the plane I am there and on my way after a couple of hours plus I have to get a rental.

My only consideration for the train is versus driving where I will have four ladies and me in a SUV and leaving at some crazy hour in the morning in order to drive straight through to Orlando:scared1:

Coming home from taking my daughter to College, I got pulled over in DE for not moving over into the left lane while a two police cars had pulled over another person for a ticket. Then the officer tried to say that one of my DD's didn't have her seat belt on when she had her coat was cover the belt while she was sleeping.

I talked my way out of a ticket but I don't want to be a target for broke police forces looking for big fines for minor :scared1:

Do you need to take your car? Would a rental be cheaper? Instead of driving to VA take Amtrak from Philly or someplace close to home.

I agree about the seats, remember some of the cars were built in the 70's.

Sorry to intrude on your thread...We are on the same cruise. I just booked the Autotrain roundtrip 2 adults 3 kids on coach (no bedroom) with a minivan (large vehicle) for $975 with the AAA discount. We are going to drive from NY to VA and get the train. Airfare plus car rental running about $2000.

Again, sorry to intrude. I was just lurking. Hope we all have a great cruise!!:cool1::cool1:

Isn't it amazing how you can go online to price something and so many people can get so many different quotes! I notice that with the airfare and hotels... you have to keep checking, as you never know when you get a better deal.

I am also a family of 5 and my airfare is $1,600. I will rent a car for a few days, but it is amazing that it is cheaper for me to fly than to do the train.

The train sounds like a fun thing to try if the price was right... but a 2 hr 40 minute flight is nice too!!

Where is Willson Park NY??

Have any of the 2012 cruisers received anything from DCL:confused3 I have been reading on that thread and many have received info on the Eastern and Western Cruises.

That's why our cruises are so dang expensive. DCL sends out fancy mailers, forms, etc... and the wrong ones to boot! Just another mistake and an expense we end up paying for.

Paid a little money on my cruise today so that the final bill won't make me jump off a bridge :scared1:

Now I'm going to take a look at my DU page to make sure that they didn't apply it to the wrong cruise:rotfl:

I saw the trailer to Cars 2 the other day and it reminded me of my first cruise when I watched Cars in the Buena Vista Theater on the Wonder back in 2006:thumbsup2

Looks like I will be spending some time watching Pirates of the Carribean IV and this movie during my free time:)

funny...I think I enjoy watching these movies more than the kids!!

Actually it's Williston Park, and it's on Long Island in Nassau County.

sorry for the misspell.... are you near any of the flooding areas?
The sun was shining for a bit today, and I can now see a part of my front yard:banana:
temps should hit near 60 on friday.....let's hope things are looking up!

Looks like 75 degrees and Sunny today in Philly:cool1::cool1::cool1:

Happy Friday Everyone!

It's 21 weeks tomorrow that I will be leaving for my pre-cruise vacation:thumbsup2
