Mickey tie dye - what type of thread?

Two years ago I made Mickey tie dye shirts with great success. The biggest pain for me was pulling the sewn shape tightly without breaking the thread. I used a type of filament thread (like super thin fishing line). Lets just say there was lots of cursing involved! I have heard about waxed thread but have been unable to find any. I picked up some thinnner waxed dental floss, but I'm worried it's still too thick to sew with and I'm worried it will damage the fabric. I had one shirt out of 5 last time that ended up with a hole from the sewing and then tightening of the thread. Any ideas on what thread to use and exactly where I could find it in a store? I've been to Michaels and JoAnn's stores. TIA!

Hi! I made a Mickey tie-dye shirt, and I used dental floss. I just went and looked at it, and I did not see any holes, so I don't know. How thick was the needle you used? Maybe you could find a thinner needle, that the floss would still fit though. Good luck!

I'm using waxed dental floss too - I think that was somewhere in the original thread. I'm hoping to dye them tomorrow afternoon so I can let you know how it works - right now I sewing away and praying I'll eventually stop sticking myself
Oh they did say in that thread to be sure you get regular waxed thread and not the mint kind. Good luck!

I'm planning to prewash mine today and get started sewing tomorrow at baseball practice. How did yours turn out misha?

Still haven't finished sewing yet - not my favorite thing to do and it's taking me FOREVER! At this point I'm hoping for a saturday am dye fest. Keep your fingers crossed for me - I can't cross mine too many bandaids:lmao:

Let me know if you get yours done first!

I initially used clear thread that I got at Joanns. I was having trouble with it because it was so slippery when I tried to gather it. I was afraid it hadn't gathered properly. So, I pulled out the 3 that I had already sewed and used waxed floss. It seemed to be much easier to work with. :wizard:

I have 5 sewn and ready to go ... hoping to have time Saturday for the tie dye party!!
