Mickey Mouse Themed Baptism Party? Update, pg. 3, post 37

Well I wouldn't do a mickey mouse theme for a baptism but I wouldn't really think twice about anyone else doing it. DH's family is catholic so all the kids get baptised while still infants and none of those baptisms I've been to have really had any sort of theme. I'm baptist so my girls haven't been baptised yet, that will be a decision they will have to make for themselves when they are older and ready. But if they are still children when they get baptised we would just do a simple celebration party or take people who came to the church to see the baptism out to eat. I think I'm sort of wierd like that though. I can't stand seeing a nativity scene at Christmas right next to Santa and Frosty. I don't have anything against Santa or Frosty but I don't think they belong next to baby Jesus and in my mind neither does Mickey Mouse. JMHO

Okay- I didn't read all the responses, but for what it's worth!! I would not do anything about the Lord on a Mickey Mouse cake!! I love all things Disney as much as the next person, but I also love the Lord. This to me, would be about honoring the Lord and celebrating a milestone in your childs religious history. I think it should be respected as such. If the plates or whatever are Mickey ummmm maybe, but definitely not the cake. It is a party-hence the MM plates, etc., but it's also religious ceremony and there is a vast difference there. Also, I know that older people or anyone in your family who doesn't do Disney is going to be offended. Yes, it's your decision and not the whole family's, but when it comes to the Lord, and people's beliefs, you can hurt feelings without even trying to!! All that being said, it's your call!! You know your family better than we do!! Just do what YOU feel!

I wouldn't have Mickey decorations/theme for a baptism. I would save Mickey for the first birthday party and stick with the traditional baptism theme for the baptism.

I wouldnt have mickey for a theme.... I am catholic, and have thrown two baptism parties (so far, I hope to get to throw more, I am catholic afterall....:rotfl2: ). I would save mickey for a birthday!

I DO hope your party goes off without a hitch tho!!!!

Being catholic and a Disney freak.I can honestly say this would not fly in my house. The focus is a Christening not Mickey mouse.I know that most of my family would throw a total fit.Save Mickey for a bday party.JMHO

Yep. My older female Catholic relatives would clobber us if we tried to make Mickey the focus of a baptism party. Jesus loves everyone but maybe he'd rather not share the spotlight with Mickey for this one... :)

I don't mean to offend anyone...but would you put Mickey ears on Christ? I don't think it is appropriate at all to mix Disney and a baby's christening.

I would not do a MM christening, and not because I think it would offend anyone, but because it is just inappropriate.

I agree with the PP's, save the MM theme for a birthday party.

I agree- I love the mouse as much as the next person... but it seems a little disrespectful to the original intent of the day. I wouldn't put the cross on mickey, but I also probably wouldn't have done the whole mickey theme. And for the person who suggested the analogy of putting mickey ears on Jesus- thank you for that laugh, i needed that today,.

I have to agree with the majority. I am Catholic and a baptism is a very religious event. I feel it is very inappropriate to have a Mickey Mouse themed party. I have never even heard of a themed baptism.

There will be plenty of birthdays where you could have a Mickey theme. For both my kids baptisms, DH and I bought them crosses for their rooms.

I am sorry to say, I'm with the others. As a Catholic parent of 5 baptized children and a Godmother, I simply do not think of having a theme other than white spiritual gathering for a baptism.

A bbq is a great idea if you are having a big crowd. Also simple paper goods are fine.

The cake however is usually white maybe with a bit of pale coloring, and often has a cross with a "God Bless Baby" message. There are pretty plates with simple religious themes. Even at the Dollar Tree I believe I saw paper goods, etc,

So even though the whole gathering does not have to be perfectly conservative, I would have the cake, desserts and plates/napkins reflect the true meaning of the gathering.

Save Mickey for birthday parties.

God Bless your special new bundle of joy.

Another question....you were mentioning a gift. What type of gift were you referring to?

A baptism gift to your own child?
Most people will give cards, cash for a special child's savings account, a cross, rosary or picture frames. Even a small collection of Bible stories in board books for taking to church as the baby gets older.

My mom made special bonnets (made for hankerchief to be used at wedding of child) for the baptism. I don't really recall giving my own children a gift. As a Godparent, we gave a savings bond and Precious Moments cross for baby's room.

Ok...here's how I got mickey (nicely) into my DS #1 christening "party". I needed center pieces and disney shopping had great Mickey stuffed mickey scarecrows. It was right after columbus day. So I put a mickey on each table as a center piece w/hay under it and candy (think trick or treating) under mickey. It was really cute. His cake...ya traditional, same w/invites..

same thing for DS 2, except his was around st patricksy day, So I went w/a st patricks theme for center pieces. Black buckets w/gold chocolate coins. But cake was traditional, same w/invites.

I'm kind of relieved to see I'm with the majority here, I was kind of afraid to open this thread! I would also save the Mickey Mouse stuff for a birthday party. Having mostly MM stuff at a party celebrating a baptism seems to minimize the religious aspect of the occasion IMO. If I were a guest, I think I would just be puzzled.

I too love disney but honestly I would not do it for a baptism, ther is nothing wrong with doing a mickey theme but I personally wouldnt. Why not wait until its ds b-day? If you want to do it, go for it. Its ur party and ur decision. Good Luck

I'm also with the majority here. Love of Mickey and love of the Lord are two very different things. Start planning a wonderful birthday party with a Mickey theme but keep Mickey out of the baptism. Good luck with baptism preparations and congrats on your little one.

So, I read all of the responses; and appreciated the opinions of all of them. I also talked to dh and he really wanted Mickey mixed into it. So we did a diluted Mickey theme, only having it through our son's outfit his uncle bought him from DTD, on the cake and for the plates and napkins for the cake. I loved the cake:

Everyone loved the party - no complaints about Mickey were made, and we had a bouncy bounce, great weather which was unexpected, and a fun time was had by all!

Glad it worked out how you wanted it too.

I am with the majority and I wouldn't have done this with a baptism. It is two separate things, but to each his own.

Good job, I say do whatever you want - you know what you and your family likes! Thumbs up!!!

I am glad it worked out for you.I wouldn't have done it ...that cake alone would have sent my devout italian Catholic grandma into heart failure...but hey different strokes different folks.:goodvibes
