Mickey Mouse Themed Baptism Party? Update, pg. 3, post 37

So, DS is getting baptised at the end of June and we're having a BBQ. I already had mickey mouse invites made, bought Mickey mouse plates and napkins, and ordered a mickey mouse cake - but would it be tacky to have the mickey mouse cake also have crosses on it and say "G*d Bless DS"? Also, I don't know what to get DS - everything seems so girly. Is having a mickey mouse theme tacky? I'm wondering if it should be more religious. There are a lot of kids coming and we're having a bouncy bounce for them.

My DDs first b-day party was all Mickey Mouse themed, so I don't think its tackie. I'm not catholic, nor am I the slightest bit religious (we do have a christmas tree every year, but our topper is a boxing Rabi!), but I don't see anything wrong with writing that on the cake with MM on it. Maybe someone else with a religious background can help you out more though!

Depends on your guests. My family is lovers of all things Disney but that would not fly with them. It would have been a big problem with a lot of the older folks. I know that would have told me it is not a b-day party and the focus of the day is the Baby and the Christining (GOD) not Mickey Mouse.

Do what you want to do it is your party, but remember I am sure some people will have a problem with it lets just hope they keep it to themselves!

I don't think that a cake with Mickey and a Cross on it would be tacky. Baptism's in our religion (Greek Orthodox) are a major event. We rent a hall, have a band etc. Never once have I been to one that had a religious theme. I think a Mickey theme is a fun way to celebrate an important day for your DS.

My family also loves Disney but we would not do Micky christening. It is your choice though and you can do what you feel comfortable with. Be aware that some of the older folks may not understand.

What have other baptism parties in your family been like? Did they have character themes?

Depending on his age, you could always get him a children's bible. You could even get a personalized one, or a ton of other personalized items at personalcreations.com.

I would personally not do a Mickey Mouse theme, because I would be uncomfortable and so would our families. Baptisms are completely religious occasions for us. My family would be horrified because they associate Mickey Mouse with commercialism, for them the opposite of the Christian values expressed by baptizing your child.

That said, you know your family, it's obviously ok with you -- so you should do what will make your immediate family the happiest. It's your party, you can decorate with Mickey Mouse if you want to!

I haven't been to other family's parties b/c my cousins are a lot older than I am so their kids are my age. The baptism is actually the day before with a dinner afterwards, the party is the next day. I'm trying to figure out what is "correct" while still having it an enjoyable day since there will be a lot of children there. It's hard to find that balance, KWIM?

It sounds like the party is far enough from the ceremony that you could just embrace the Mickey Mouse theme and go with it. I would have the G*d Bless DS cake with crosses at the dinner, and just go with Mickey on the cake for the party. I think it would look pretty incongruous to have Mickey and crosses and the same cake, but that's JMHO.

At the end of the day, you should worry about pleasing yourself and dh. No matter what you do, someone will not be happy, so it shouldn't be you!

Being catholic and a Disney freak.I can honestly say this would not fly in my house.The focus is a Christening not Mickey mouse.I know that most of my family would throw a total fit.Save Mickey for a bday party.JMHO

That is a tough call, I know my family would never go for it, a b-day party is one thing but a baptism? I remember my DD's, it was pink and silver with crosses, etc. Much more low key than her b-day.

I personally think that the two things do not go together....I have never been to a themed one, that to me would be a little strange. IMHO! I would do a Christening reception in a traditional way and then save Mickey for a birthday party. Again JMHO

I too agree with the other posters, but as someone said, you gotta do what you want to do. For my 1st DD it was just family, so we had a Winnie The Pooh cake, only because we wanted ice-cream cake. For 2nd DD, who was baptised earlier this month, we had pink and white everything, including the cake. We did little pink buck store booties as give aways.

I think though that it just really depends on you and your family, what kind of baptism it is, what your traditions are...

My dh is Catholic and I am Protestant so our ideas of what a Baptism consists of are very different. For him a baptism is for a baby or young child. To me a baptism is for a wide age range and not so formal. So I think those factors (what age the child is) might play into if Mickey fits. At least for me it would. So not knowing what your baptism will be like I can't give a 100% honest opinion.

I think it would be nice to have a religious cake at the dinner and then celebrate with a Mickey party the next day.

I have to agree with this. Save Mickey for a birthday party theme. A Baptism and a Birthday party are two totally different events and should have very different "theming." Of course, that's just my opinion.

Sorry I have to agree...while it is totally your party and of course you can do whatever you like and not have to justify to anyone at all, BUT since you asked about mickey and crosses on the same cake, I did kind of lol when I read that, I don't really think they go together, in fact, they are kind of opposites almost....maybe having two cakes would be better, a mickey one for the kids, which would be cute and fun for them, and then maybe a more traditional one for the older generation, with cross and the G@D Bless on it. JMO though

I agree with other posters. It is your DS and your party so you can do what you want but some family members may get offended. That being said I love Mickey but I would save that for a birthday. A christening is welcoming your child into the church and is a very religious occasion in my church. 99.99% of my family would be offended by something so secular as the theme of the christening party. As stated earlier though it is your DS and your right to do as you please.

I have to agree with the others. I would not to a character themed baptism celebration. I don't think it's appropriate, and I know everyone in my family would feel the same way. I love Disney just as much as the next DISer, but I'd leave Mickey out of this one.

I also vote for no... and I am as far from being religious as you can get. My 4 kids are all baptized catholic because of dh and my 8yo just made her communion last week.
