My son is Turing 4 and wants a MM Clubhouse cake. I've found lots of good ideas online, but they all use fondant. I've always bee scared to use the stuff and have done some really cute cakes without it, but I think it's time to give it a try. I want to get the colored fondant, anyone recommend a brand that is easy to use and any tips?

So I make my own marshmallow fondant. Its super easy and yummy and much cheaper than the store bought stuff. Its died with the gel food coloring you can get at any grocery store. Let me find you the recipe....

Good luck! There is another lady on here that does some awesome fondant work too! Please post pictures when you are done!

I always work with fondant and I find it much easier than frosting. Definitely try it and let us know how it goes. :)

Marshmallow fondant gets another vote from me! :thumbsup2

Here's a picture of my cake (nowhere near as good as the PPs, but pretty darn good for MY abilities)

I made a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse cake for my son's birthday a few years ago and I cheated and used the ready-made fondant (bought it at Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon :) ). I added red paste dye to it and squeezed it around in a ziploc bag until it was uniformly colored. I don't care for fondant icing, so I frosted the cake with buttercream first and when it was time to serve the cake, I just peeled off the fondant and it was fine.

I'm definitely no professional, but this is how my cake turned out. I thought it was cute. :)

This is such a fun cake! How did you do the wave? Is it cake underneath?

I do alot of cakes. Fondant can be tricky, but you'll never know unless you try. I too make my own marshmallow fondant, I find it tastes better than store bought fondant and you can color it any color you want!!! I recommend using disposable gloves if you dont want to get that color all over your hands!!! (I dont use them, but my family is use to me with multi-colored hands!) OH i recommend using gel colors. if you put alot of liquid into fondant it will make it very sticky. Good LUCK!!!! Let us know how it goes!!

Thanks!:goodvibes It was a rectangle bread pan. I froze the cake and then carved out the shape of the wave, and then covered it with the fondant. The cake carves great when frozen, or very chilled. Learned about freezing it to carve it on Ace of Cakes:)

I also use home made marshmallow fondant. It's basically a bag of mini marshmallows with a little bit of water that I melt in the microwave and then add sifted powdered sugar to. It takes a while to kneed it to the correct consistency. It's a bit like using play dough.

If you want to make decorations i suggest combining the fondant with gumpaste (I get the wilton ready made). The gumpaste will harden and hold it's shape better than the straight fondant.

If you are just thinking of doing accents with the fondant you might just want to by the ready made kind. My Walmart carries a package with a few premixed colors that would work well for a Mickey Mouse theme. Red especially is hard to make from scratch.
