Mickey head earrings can cause cancer?

My girls (3 & 5) got their ears pierced about a week prior to our latest DLR trip. So I promised them I'd buy them each a special pair of earrings while we were there. Both girls chose some really cute Mickey head birthstone earrings. They have had their new earrings for about 6 weeks now and I was going to let them switch them out to their mickey ones soon. Anyway, as I got them out of the bag (it was just put up after our trip), I noticed on the bottom of the receipt that it says that they contain material known to the state of CA to cause cancer. What?! Does anyone have any idea what material that is and how big of a risk it is? The earrings are adorable, but not so much that I'd want to risk exposing them to something unnecessarily.

You will find that just about everything sold in DLR contains that same warning label. The state of California has very strict laws about labeling hazardous materials and therefore you will find these warnings used to an extreme. I'd say you're safe.

When you park at the big parking garage, you'd have seen a notice about that, too, that pretty much the park contains whatever the substance is...

EVERYTHING is known by the state of CA to cause cancer! The MALL has big signs on it saying the building contains chemicals known by the state of CA to cause cancer :rotfl2:

For an earring, I'd avoid if practical since it goes into my kids head and all, better to be safe then sorry, but wouldn't be too worried about it.

Well I haven't heard a bumch of kids getting cancer from Disney Earings I would say let them wear it.

Even the MALLS in CA have that cancer warning on the doors. I guess going to the mall can cause cancer.:lmao:

I've been wearing the Mickey head earrings for years now and nothings wrong yet. I think it's just a warning since CA is Sooooo strict. My dd has some and I let her wear them too.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. If you are concerned, I know that you can get stuff to coat nickel earringbacks so that they don't irritate your ears. You could coat the posts and backs with that stuff.

i googled "california cancer warning disney" for you (the first "hit" was your thread, LOL), and found an article here about it. It's all about Proposition 65, and the notice is on ALL receipts at Disneyland. If you google without "disney" you'll see that CA wants to put the warning on some french fries, over a certain ingredient.

Thanks everyone. :) I sort of assumed it was just a CYA deal and that I shouldn't worry. I imagine that they could say that just about anything causes cancer if they really wanted to. I will be keeping the earrings and letting my daughters wear them soon. princess:

I understand your initial shock, this past november dh and I stayed at Howard Johnson hotel and when we were waiting for the elevator I saw a sign that said somethign like this building contains such and such which has been known to cause cancer or somethign like that, I freaked and wanted to leave hotels immediately and dh laughed and said "You'll find those signs everywhere, they just have to put them up to avoid lawsuits"
needless to say I didn't get cancer and I"m staying at Howard Johnsons again this year.
