The Pre-Trip Report
Day One--Leaving on a Jet Plane
5 am--the alarm goes off and DH rolls over to shut it off. He gets up and graciously allows me to sleep another 45 minutes.
5:45--I get up, shower and get DS ready to go. DS refuses to eat anything but toast and a drink of milk. Gah.
6:45--DH loads the car and we head out. Until DH realizes he MUST go to WalMart for dress socks and new tennis shoes. I want to beat him silly, but he insists. So we go. And we find the socks he wants, but not shoes in his size that he likes. Fark.
7:15--We pull into a Jack in the Crack drive through and order breakfast.
7:35--We arrive at the airport, but North Shuttle parking is full. Crud. We go around to South Shuttle. Also full.
But there is a nice man standing at the entrance to South Shuttle who hands us a coupon for a few dollars off Terminal parking. So we're happy again.
8ish--we arrive in Terminal parking and find a spot. I take DS inside with his stroller, diaper bag, backpack and our carry-on while DH makes two trips to bring in both of our suitcases, DS's carseat and roller-dealie and DS's portable crib.
We get the portable crib and both suitcases checked in and haul the rest of our stuff towards security. At which point, we run into DMIL and DFIL, who are both excited to see DS. We get through security, which is a royal pain as always. The plane is scheduled to leave a little after 10, so we sit around and wait for DSIL, her DH and IttyBitty (DNephew) to arrive. DSIL and her gang arive about 20 min before the plane is scheduled to leave.
When we go up and get our boarding passes, we realize that not only is the flight into Detroit EXTREMELY full, but that we are all seperated. DS and DMIL are seated at the bulkhead row behind first class. DFIL, DH and I are seated about 5-6 rows behind that with DSIL, her DH and IttyBitty close to the rear of the plane.
After the seatbelt sign goes off, DH goes up and ends up spending most of the flight crouched on the floor next to DS, in order to try and calm him down. I try to relax, even though planes make me a wee bit nervous and eventually, we make it into Detroit.
We drag all of our luggage onto the transport bus to the car rental and are assigned our rental cars for the week.
Everybody's hungry, so we stop at McDonald's for a bite to eat and DS throws a fit. He doesn't want his chicken nuggets, so DH buys him a hamburger which seems to make him a wee bit happier.
After a long, long drive we finally make it to the hotel and unpack. About 30 min later, we caravan over to Gramma's house to hang out for the rest of the evening. The mood there is pretty morbid, with various aunts, uncles, inlaws, outlaws and cousins sitting around being depressed. Everybody is glad to see us, but it's still pretty gloomy and after a few hours, we head back to the hotel on the excuse that DS needs to be put to bed. We make plans to head over to Auntie J's the next day for a get together and take off.
Day 2 coming soon!
