Hi, just wondering how many aussies have ventured to Miami and what the highlights were. Looking to do something a bit different before we get to Orlando where we will be for 2 weeks, and DD15 is voting for Miami.

Other than the beaches and scenes from Dexter  looking for any recommendations and suggestions.

We stayed in Miami because the Everglades were on my bucket list. I really loved the everglades!

  • I caught an airboat ride and went to a alligator farm.
  • We walked around to see some of the Art Deco buildings (ho hum)
  • We shopped and ate at SoBe
  • We hit the beach

On a previous trip, we drove down the Keys and stayed at Key West. I think this is something you would only do once.

There are boat trips through the upper keys (Key Biscayne comes to mind) and depending on the time of year you're going, you could go look for Dugongs.

I will add that the Everglades won't be for everyone. But it's right up my alley.

Have fun with your planning and I hope you decide to go.

Our cruise in april leaves from Miami, we will spend a night or two either side of the cruise in Miami, thought the Everglades might be interesting for DH, we have also thought about doing the Keys.
Other than that it will be beach time and shopping:thumbsup2

We haven't done Miami but did drive down to the Keys for a few days. Would have been a better stay if DH hadn't been in bed with swine flu! I enjoyed the pool, warm weather and the hotel spa while he downed tamiflu and slept. Haven't done Miami but know a group of guys who love going there every year to party - I think the clubs/bars are big there?

When I was in Miami, I did a speed jet boat it showed off the houses of the rich and famous and was fun.
Did a bike ride around Miami which I loved, great way to see the place. Other than that I was at the beach
I did find Miami more expensive then most of the places I visited

great info. Everglades sounds good but DW is so scared of alligators that i doubt she would even contemplate going on a airboat.

I went and took a look at my Everglades pictures. Yes, on some of the walks we did there were definitely alligators close by. I'd forgotten! :rotfl:

But they were just happy minding their own business in the sun.

And there were a few alligators to the airboat ride we did. But then, it was at an alligator farm; so I think they could afford to position a few of them at strategic locations along the way.

There were quite a few gardens and art deco places outside of Miami that I was interested to go visit. I never got the time to do so. Might be worth taking a look to see if it appeals.

Mentioned that boat ride and it was rejected outright due to any possiblity of alligators. maybe just enjoy the beach and rest before WDW. trying to add something different to the trip rather than spend all the time at WDW.

Have fun deciding where to go.

If you are thinking of going to Melbourne, Florida......it is a really really small town. Two hours would be about right, if you include lunch and the photostop. Nice beach there....but then there are nice beaches everywhere.

A couple of years ago we got to the bottom of the drop in Splash Mountain and there was a gator in the water beside us having a lovely time in the sun! It obviously wasn't huge but a surprise all the same.

Now look what you've done. Mrs Marvel will NEVER want to go on Splash again.!!! :rotfl:

now i will be looking for a gator everytime i go on splash !! and it will add to the excitement for DW, i will only tell once on the ride.
