MGM - Great Movie Ride......

Does anyone else think it's time to change some of the scenery /sets on the Great Movie Ride? I have to admit, my DW and I ride it everytime we're down there and do enjoy it, but after 9 years thought it would be nice to interject something new or different?

On the flip side, I realize that it would be a large task and require the ride to be shut down for a period of time, but it may be worth it. I'm not saying revamp the entire ride, just a scene or two......maybe Alien with Apollo 13? :confused3

This was something they've been meaning to do. Armageddon was almost certain to be in there.... I dunno... I think it would be good for the ride.

They would probably tear the whole thing down before the revamped any part of that ride. I am biased, having been a GMR tourguide, but I think it's great. Rumor is because Disney is losing the rights to MGM and the fact that the stupid hat blocks the entire Chinese Theatre, the ride won't be around forever... :confused3

I think it would be a shame if they close the whole thing! I love the ride, mostly b/c I love old MGM movies but also b/c I think it is such a necessary for a park that's main focus is the movies. If they get rid of it after the contract with MGM expires, any idea on what they would be putting there? I would at least hope they would have some kind of ride through the movies...maybe focusing on Disney films.

I have always loved GMR, and there are certain parts of it that I think should NEVER go away, but I do agree that some parts should be updated to newer movies.

They did update the film at the end a few years ago to include some newer films, which was great, but a few new dioramas would be even better.

Just as long as they don't touch the Munchkinland area - the Wicked Witch is the BEST audio-animatronic Disney ever made!

But the gangster and old west areas could be updated, since they don't pertain to any specific movie, and a few of the older dioramas like Footlight Parade and maybe even Casablanca could be replaced by other top movies of the same era.

Just don't touch Margaret Hammilton!

Honestly, I love the ride the way it is. I'm a movie buff and I truly love all the scenes (except that Tarzan one -- I mean, come on - does anyone really like the original Tarzan movies?). That being said, I wish they'd update the film at the end again. It just looks "old" and run-down. Plus, when the most recent thing on there is Armageddon (Armageddon!?!?!?!), the film could use an update.

I think they could stand to "change" the ending movie, just leave Bo Derrick running on the beach, in fact, make it longer :).

Whatever they changed, I would hope they would NEVER change the first scene with the gangster, and NEVER change the Wizard of Oz scene.

*Mark this, as you'll never hear it again, as I've never said it before..............this is one of the few attractions that I think is pretty much good the way it is. Some changes could be made but nothing drastic.

I love GMR but I do think they could make a couple of changes. How many people are that familiar with Alien, for example? I wouldn't mind seeing them change that segment to something more (and younger) guests are more familiar with.

I definitely think they need to knock down the hat and restore the sight of this ride. That would help keep it popular.

I really like the hat - honestly, I do - but I DESPISE where they built it.

I knew someone would like the Tarzan movies ;) ...

Anyway, I'm not saying Disney's had multitudes of hits after Armageddon (there was a little movie called Pirates of the Caribbean, though), but I'd be happy if they just removed Armageddon from the film. Seeing Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck up on the screen with greats like Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, and Bogart make me laugh everytime I go on the ride.

"Pirates" might be one suggestion.

what??? you must have not have never seen Ben affleck in those all time classics like Paycheck & the one where he replaced the Harrrison Ford character from clear and present danger( can't even remember the title, must have blocked it from my memory), ( just kidding as i was about armaggedon, ) puts old ben right up there with carrot top as entertainer of
the yr. ;)

i really liked pirates actually but they already have aride that's kind of similar

I think they did change the Alien part a little to make it less scary. They could delete it altogether as far as I'm concerned. I seriously can't stand the Alien trilogy...DH watched one of them AGAIN tonight. Oh well...gives me time to be on the DisBoard. :)

Maybe they could add a little bit of WICKED to the Wizard of Oz scene. And I agree, they should update the movie clips a little. My kids have no clue who some of those stars are.

The did change the alien scene, years ago, but mostly it's not scary because the aliens don't always work and if they do, the smoke doesn't always come out with it. Kinda takes the mystery out of it. I agree with changing the movie, although I love it now and they would probably screw it up :rotfl: I think GMR is so great because it is a completely different kind of ride, one where you are in the show. And I think it is a great chance for kids to see some real classics and some real actors that they probably haven't before. Plus where else can you see the Wicked Witch?? :wave2:

I had high expectation with this attraction and unfortunatly i was left quite disapointed, im sure there are things that disney could do to improve whats already there without changing the real essance of the ride

I agree 100%!!!! My 11 DD noticed this when we rode last week, saying "she's done so well it's scary, she really looks like a human actor, not a machine!!!" Linclon in the HOP and the American Adventure animatronics are the other Disney high water marks, but they still don't beat that witch....

If you have a good tour guide/gangster or cowboy the ride is GREAT!!! Last time I went, our cowgirl was terrible as was our tour guide. This is mostly because they are forced to go by script now and not to stray, which kind of ruins the performance.

Ok DH & I haven't been to WDW since 2000... have they really added Armageddon to the ride!?!? I LOVE that movie!!

My middle son is a huge fan of the GMR. I won't even mention the possibility of this ride being changed. We'd have to have endless conversations about it.

If you have a chance, go sign his guestbook at his GMR website: thegreatmovieride.tripod.com (no www in front for some reason). He's always thrilled to have new site visitors!
