MGM closing 6pm Sat sept 4?

Seems like I read somewhere this week that is the weekend of the Tom Joyner Family Reunion...apparently he is a national DJ and that night is the night of a ticketed concert event...I might be wrong but that's my guess.

I would have to agree with Michaelwilliammidd, although I'm not familiar with this DJ or particular event, my first thought was that it sounds like MGM will be closing early for some sort of private function or private ticket event.

I posted all about this event on the families thread about three weeks ago asking the question as to who plan on attending.
My DH and I attended this weekend event last year and had a great time. This year we are not buying the entire package (we have accommodations being new members of DVC; however, Disney is selling the MGM Saturday night concert thru their ticket division).

Tom Joyner is an African-American d.j. that has a syndicated broadcast. The artists that will be performing at MGM include Alicia Keys and jazz/rb songstress Anita Baker, also one of the member's from the group Outkast just to name a few.

I hope this helps answer your questions

Ticketmaster has tickets to the Sept 4 Tom Joyner event, and the website says the event begins at 9:00

Odd, i just did another search to confirm that, and on the MGM studios site it says 8:30

this sounds more in line.

Is it standard to close down a whole park for a special ticketed event?

I guess that WDW does this quite a bit. There is another event that will held at MK 9/10 thru 9/11 in which MK closes at 6p.m. I believe its call 'Night of Joy'

Night of Joy is a Christian music night, they do it every year about this time and so does Universal I forget the name of USO's event.

It depends on the park, for MGM, yes, it does seem to close early more often than other parks for private events. You rarely hear of MK closing early for anything other than Grad Nights, MNSSHP, MVMCP and Disney sponsored events. Future World may close early or have private parties late in to the evening, but they usually do not do so for World Showcase (outside of special parties in the American pavilion rotunda). Typhoon Lagoon will also occasionally have private parties at night.

Universal's event is held on the same nights and is called "Rock the Universe."
