I want to get my almost 8 year old son a metal detector for Christmas. I have no idea which one to get. Anybody have any advice? I want one that actually works well!
Thanks
Whites is the best company to buy a detector from. My father has about 6 of their detectors ( ever year we get him a new one ). He has found some great stuff over the years!
I'd say for a kid try Bass Pro Shops, they have nice selection.
But a "good" metal detector will run you a lot of money. My dad's cost $500 but he uses it for work, detecting pipe and other things several feet under ground, not coins. He had a less expensive model which worked okay, found stuff a few inches down which is probably the goal for a kid - figure it will cost about $100. Anything cheaper and they just don't work well - they don't detect enough of a variety of metals.
ETA -my dad's is six years old so I'd say the will last longer if you take care of them.
He upgrades. They are not all the same model. He got into water metal detecting recently... All different styles.. plus now he can take my mom or friends with him when he goes!
I got one for my nephew in Target. It is the Scientific brand in the toy department.
It is very sensitive to metal. He used it at the beach and he found some coins and some jewelry. Nothing expensive, but he was excited.
