Messed up big time? - banked points

I already banked the remaining points (45) for this use year (Dec). Now we are talking one bedroom and I would need those 45 points for my 2018 trip. I was going to call in July/Aug to make the new 2018 ressie. Do I have to wait until Dec to make the ressie so I can use the 45 points?

You never have to wait for a use year to book a trip. It's always about the point status during your trip.

You just have to wait for the 11 or 7 month booking window.

You will have no problem calling in July/Aug 2017 to book a 2018 trip using those banked (Dec 2016) points.

To use what were your current Dec UY points (actually 2016 points) during the timeframe of Jan - Nov 2018 you have to have banked them prior to making a reservation. When you call to book has nothing to do with UY - what is required is to have the points valid for use for the time you want to reserve for.

With a Dec UY and a reservation anytime from January 1 2018 - Nov 30 2018 you can use banked 2016 points current 2017 points or borrow 2018 points.

If the reservation were for December 2018 then you could use banked 2017 points, current 2018 points and borrow 2019 points.

For either of these you can do the actual booking 11 months from check in at your home resort or 7 months from check in for a non-home resort.

Points do not need to be available on the day that you make the reservation, they need to be available for the dates of your stay.

You are currently in your Dec 2016 UY (it started Dec 1, 2016 and ends Nov 30, 2017). If you banked Dec 2016 points, they are now good for Dec 1, 2017 through Nov 30, 2018 which is when I assume your trip is. So you are fine. You would have needed to bank those point before making the reservation for 2018 in 2017.

When I am trying to figure out what I need, I first figure out UY of trip, and then I know I can "pay" for it with banked points from the UY prior to the trip, points for the UY of the trip, and borrow points from the UY after the trip. When I call to book, either 11 months or 7 months out, I just need to be sure that I have the points in the correct status prior to or during the call. So, as mentioned, if you need those banked 2016 points for the 2018 trip, you would have been required to bank them prior to making them available for the reservation so having already done it, it's one less step you have to do when you call in July!
