Due to a water main break at **** Middle School, all **** students have been transported to High School East. There will be a 2 hour early dismissal commencing at 12:40 p.m. for **** students only. All parents will be notified via a phone chain and via this website. All children will be provided with lunch at High School East prior to dismissal.

Although we are not encouraging anyone to do so, any parent who wishes to pick up their child may sign their child out in the High School East auditorium. Parents will only be permitted to pick up their own children.

dd told me the busses never went to the middle school today, but took them straight to the high school. they put some of the kids in the gym and some in the auditorium. they had very little they could do with the kids. she called my sister and asked to be picked up.

I don't know what she'll do if they cancel school tomorrow.

Wow! I think there was a real communication breakdown there. Our water main broke once a little before school opened and they sent the kids right back home--just the HS. I think if it was broken all day they should have closed the middle school.
Plus, are most parents checking their school websites during the day? I only go to ours to get a teacher EMail address. I work 1/2 hour from where I live and the "phone chain" would just leave a message on my machine--dropping my girls off at an empty house. Hopefully your district will learn and do better media announcements, etc.

When this happens in our area they run notices along the bottom of the television on all local stations, plus radio notice as well. It has happened a few times in the past and this seems to have worked well.

Well, if they canceled school, the'd miss out on a day of NY State Aid!

My favorite was last week on Friday, the day after the snow. I got to work in the same amount of time as usual, and the roads were completely dry, but we had 1 hour delay in opening. So, in my district, that amounted to about 6000 telephone calls in the phone chain, and untold # of parents who had to wait an hour later before the buses picked up their kids - so they were late to work.

I still don't underatand why the teachers, and school buses couldn't be on time, since the rest of the world has to!

Anyway, BR, I know you're in a big district too - hope it all straightens out soon.

we had early dismissal on thursday and a 2 hour delayed opening friday. when I left for wrok early friday morning, I could see why -- although I could get my car up and down those hills, the buses would have trouble managing the ice.

we had 900 middle school kids in the high school gym and auditorium today. judst checked the website again, and they don't know what the plan is for tomorrow.

When we first moved here, I often couldn't understand why schools were closed or opened late the day after a snow. I live on a farm & we have a lot of drifting because of the fields. The roads would be dry here, but school was closed. It turns out that there are a number of streets in town that are on a hill & have parking on boths sides. They have trouble getting plows down the street.
