I simply can't wait to visit Mesa Verde National Park! However, the information says that individuals are only allowed to purchase tickets for ONE of the guided tours into the actual architectural sites. Which is better (and why!): Cliff Palace or Balcony House?

Is the place really that busy in the summer that they can't let people see more than one site?

Details and experiences appreciated! Thanks!

Yes, it really can be that busy in the summer! They have the limits on tours so everyone will be able to visit at least one place.

There are many places you can visit without a tour including Spruce Tree House, Mesa Top Ruins Road (visit all the stops) Farview Ruin etc. Also Wetherill Mesa which is about 1/2 hour drive from the main area has Spring House and Badger House Community to visit, as well as a tour at Long House.

I would visit Cliff Palace on a tour, it is huge and beautiful.
Visit www.nps.gov/meve for information.
