Merging two reservations

Thank you so much!
One thing to realize about timeshares, and esp DVC, is there are rules then there are the real rules then the rules as interpreted by the system and finally, the rules as enforced (or not) by the worker bees. Put another way, DVC is consistently inconsistent. How this works in practice is those who learn the rules and how they are applied, make the most of the system and this includes learning the inconsistencies. Put another way, if you know there is something that's inconsistently enforced or something you think is supposed to be different than the answer you get, one can just call back or ask for a supervisor (or both in some cases). DVC is famous (or infamous) for making exceptions to the rules, sometimes inappropriately IMO.

...I had 2 days & 4 days with a day in between on wait list. The wait list matched and I emailed them. Got back a confirmation within the day. The 4 days had been 2 separate ones and they had combined those on their own without me asking which they likely would have done with these as well...
I booked a 1 bedroom at VGC 8 months in advance, and was surprised to have 2 days unavailable (perhaps because of Candlelight).

So I booked 4-nights and 3-nights, and made 2 1-night waitlists in the middle:
  • 10 days later, the second night waitlist matched -- with a new Confirmation Number
  • 1 day later, the 1-night and 3-night were merged -- using the existing 3-night Confirmation Number
  • 4 days later, the first night waitlist matched -- with a new Confirmation Number
  • 6 days later, all 9-nights were merged -- using what was the original 4-night Confirmation Number
I did not contact Member Services to merge the reservations, everything happened "Auto-Magically" :wizard:

This is consistent with my understanding and experience but as with anything DVC, they are nothing if not inconsistent.

glad I stumbled onto this thread. I have two separate reservations next month for the same room type. I figured I wouldn't have to change rooms, but apparently there is a chance I would have. I emailed MS and asked to have them merged.
thanks

Sure it's been hit or miss but they often have and in every situation I've had in the last few years where they had a few days to sit on them, they did on their own.

Lucky!

I have not had them combine in quite awhile either.

It sounds like you're agreeing with dean but the wording is the opposite from what dean is saying.

I'm glad they stopped doing that as i normally book two home resorts bookings at 11 months 1 to keep and 1 to swap for something else at 7 months or combine if /i can't find anything. It was annoying when they were automatically combines before 7 months.

I think the majority are having them auto combined. As usual I'm the unlucky one where things don't go normally. :)

If I were doing what you're doing, I would make the reservations different from each other. Opposite listing of names or a different name altogether or left off, so they aren't exactly the same.

It didn't work in combining my 2 for last Dec.
I emailed and they said they made a note, but it wasn't guaranteed. Really didn't want to change rooms with a 2 year old.
On check in I asked about it and they did NOT have a note, but they combined them right then. I had to check out of 1 (at the desk) for the record and check in for the second, but didn't have to change rooms.

It sounds like we may be talking different situations. What's being discussed is having multiple reservations under one contract for the same exact resort and booking category that could have been reserved as a group but were not. Linking would not apply in that situation which sounds like what you're referring to. If it's separate reservations you'll have to check in again regardless.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Always helpful to see specific examples!

Bottom line is you need to learn what MS and the resorts can do, who does what and make sure that they do what you want. Learning the system is the best way to ensure the best vacations.
