Menus at DLRP, queries

I am looking at menus for DLRP and have decided not to go for the dining plan option as I had intended to.

However there will be two adults and one child aged 2 years. Breakfast is included with our stay and I have assumed we will likely have a small lunch (CS) and a sit down dinner. I have read that children under the age of 3 get to eat for free, but only if they eat off of your plate??? I have read mixed comments on this, i.e. they can eat for free at TS too, is this correct? I have looked at the menus and it appears that there are children's menus but often they seem to be 3 courses (fixed price). My son is not a big eater and would not be able to eat such huge portions, but then again he would not necessarily like to eat what we order either. Is there any way I can order him something small? For example at Cafe Mickey the childrens menu is EU19.99 for starter, main course, drink and dessert or a burger on it's own is EU12.99. All of this for children under 12, well surely a child of 11 would eat more than a child of 2? 12.99 seems very expensive for a burger if he would only manage maybe half! I am assuming of course that we would have to pay for him if I were to order him something from the children's menu?

I am so confused!!!! I would like to know this as our meals play a big factor in costing up this trip.

Thanks everyone

Your son will eat for free at all buffet restaurants in the resort, so he can have his own plate and eat what he likes.
at cafe mickey i, d just order a couple of pizzas between all 3 of you instead of ordering a meal for each of you.
at table service under~3s may be offered plain pasta or chips, something like that, free. but if you want anything else for your son at TS restaurants you either pay for a meal for him or he eats some of yours.

My granddaughter's a bit of a picky eater - some days she'll hardly eat anything and the next she eats like a horse lol - so on the trips when she was under 3 we either went to buffets where she was free and just got a selection of the stuff that she would eat (I remember spending ages picking pineapple chunks and grapes out of the fruit salad at one place as that was all she wanted to eat except for a few chicken nuggets!). When we went to places like Annettes we just ordered her chicken nuggets and fries off the kids menu or just a side of fries with our meals and she had some of my burger. She also wanted some of my onion rings, until she realised there was onion inside, I was left with a pile of onion as she just wanted the crispy batter off the outside :rotfl:

As most of the counter service kids meals come with fruit, me & my daughter in law often ordered 3 kids meals to share. Granddaughter would eat the fruit out of all the meals plus some of her fries, burger/nuggets and the icecream and what she didn't eat my daughter in law had. I find a kids meals is plenty for me for lunch anyway as I don't always want a large meal until the evening.

Thanks for the replies

I probably will do some buffets, but there are some other restaurants I definitely want to try and specific meals I want to try, so would hate to be limited to only ordering what I think my son might eat.

I just thought there might be a smaller portion of food for kids under 3. I know baby food is on offer but he hasn't eaten baby food in over a year. It just seems such a waste of money to order him a chicken meal if he would only eat half and at 12.99 it's costly! For example if I wanted to order a piece of real chicken for him (i.e. a chicken fillet, not nuggets) do you think I would be able to do that at a TS restaurant? I would easily do that and share my chips with him, but I would prefer he had his own main if I wanted to order something different and hopefully not be charged 13 EUR for it!:rolleyes1

At TS can I get a plate for him and share no problem?

Thanks for the tips

I honestly think you'll struggle to do as you'd like to in table service restaurants Caitlin, I suspect you'd need to order a meal for your son if he won't want whatever you're having. There is no smaller portion version of the table service meals, its either the menu price, the kids meal full price, or he eats from your plate.

There are no smaller portions then the kids meals but most TS will have side orders you could purchase for him if he didn't want what you were eating. Some TS will provide you something for an under 3 but what seems to vary. Cafe Mickey for example gave my 2 year old the full child's meal for free. Whilst others say they have only ever got something like pasta or a bowl of chips. Buffet service is always the safer option as they can have their own plate with whatever food they will eat for free.

We have gotten a free full meal for my DS at Cafe Mickey wheb he was two & he had free chips, water & ice cream at Annettes. The other nights we did buffets where he was free. If you ask for the under 3s menu its what I found got the most favourable response.
The pizzas at Cafe Mickey are huge enough to share and thats our plan for October. One pizza, one garlic bread & a portion of chips should more then cover DS, DD & I.

The kids meals are pretty expensive for young kids, even for our nearly 5 year old we didn't always get one and he shared our food at table service. Do you have a minibar in your room? If so I would probably take babybels, pepperamis, dried fruit etc with me and have them handy to go with a few chips or something if you ask for under 3's meals and don't get something satisfactory. A balanced meal should contain protein, carbs and fruit or veg, if all they offer is pasta or chips then I wouldn't consider that suitable to be honest and would tell them so if they questioned why I had brought my own food for him.
