Men-"get over it and 'reground'"!

Amen, Disneygirl2002...

And when he REGROUNDS during that porno, tell him to count how many girl on girl scenes there are.... :rolleyes2

I can't wait to see this movie but only go to the movies WITH my son who is 13... I don't think so... Now it's on DVD I have to get it and watch it without him!

Is there a reason you all do this though?? Every time I go they loudly announce what you're renting. Why do they do this? It's not like I'm renting anything bad but it's kind of annoying. I don't see why everyone in the store needs to know what you're renting.

Not to hijack but I'm curious too...I haven't been to Blockbuster in years and years; is this a company policy now and if so, why?

Until recently, I was a manager at a Blockbuster (I know, I know, you're all so jealous). The reasoning they gave me when they instituted the "repeat the title" policy was that the company was issuing too many credits for people renting the wrong movie. B-Buster was on a huge "credit crackdown" when I was there... But it is amazing the number of people who would return within hours of renting a movie and tell me that it wasn't the one they intended to rent. I could never figure out if A. they were just absentminded & really did pick the wrong movie up or B. they went home, watched it, and came back CLAIMING they had a brain mis-fire in order to rent another movie for free...

So that is the "official" reason behind repeating the title, though as a paying customer, I too find it irritating.

I made a bet with a friend who is also on the Dis. He KNEW he was going to win. So, I bet him that if he lost he had to watch Brokeback Mountain and tell all our friends he watched it.

Needless to say, he lost. So, when we meet up in Disney in May, I'm putting my kids to bed and he is going to come watch the movie with me. I don't really know much about the movie, but I am SOOO looking forward to watching him watch the movie.

I'm bothered by the new genre of films, such as the Saw series and Hostel (and they're making a sequel of that one), that focus on torture, sadism, dismemberment, terror, and sexually-motivated murder. That's entertainment??

Amen to that!

I wonder if Brokeback Mountain had been about two COWGIRLS, if the men would feel the same scenes would be too graphic.

Hmmmmm......I wondeeeeeerr. :teeth:

Exactly! This is a double standard in our society.
As long as it's lesbians (or bi-sexual girls), then it's great! But if it deals with gay men, it's horrible.
Part of this is because they think that if they like it, they "must" be gay. And there is still such a stigma and too many stereotypes about gay men.

And it seriously gets on my nerves. I've always said that guys need to get over the embarrassment with gay issues.

It's remarkable how many people are interested in the motivations of others regarding seeing BBM or not seeing BBMt. Who cares if someone is uncomfortable with the content?

I thought the Passion of the Christ was very moving, powerful and important. However, I didn't think less of or automatically judge others who said it 'wasn't for them'.

I guess it almost seems like a witch hunt... like the decision to see a movie is the determining factor of whether or not someone is willing to embrace homosexuality or an uptight homophobic.

JMHO

***ETA, I am not talking about this thread or even this forum...but in RL too. Just seems like the question of motivation keeps coming up with this movie***

Another guy should have handed him the movie Bound and told him that it's a great movie but sadly it isn't graphic enough.

The video store I worked for never did this. If someone came back a few hours later and saif "I picked up the wrong movie", sometimes we would exchange the movie out, but most of the time would say "sorry, you should have made sure before you left that you had the right movie". But most of our customers didn't do this type of thing. :)

That's not the point of this thread. The point is about how uncomfortable guys are just to say "no, I don't want to see it". The hem haw arround and come up with excuses as to why they don't want to see it.
If they don't want to see it, just say a simple "no".

That is so funny...it would never occur to me to try to get a free movie, even if I legitimately HAD picked up the wrong one. I'd have just said, well, my mistake!

In re: to the OP...when asked if he would watch BBM, my DH replied, "Hell, no." and went back to watching golf. :teeth: He has no time for excuses! :lmao:

I agree with you. My dh refuses to see this movie because it's about two cowboys. He even said that if it was about two cowgirls he would be first in line to see. What a retard!!!

I won't make him watch either but sense he is gone for 9 months it's on my blockbuster mailing list. I can't wait to see!!!!

Men just need to get over themselves!! Its just a movie for god sake.

so is there something wrong with me when my Husband says Lets get the new sponge bob movie and I say....You are kidding me I can't stand him out loud instead of just saying no? But wait it is sponge bob and not a contraversial movie...Ok lets try Passion of the Christ. I am a christian. (and just for the point, I have no issues with people who are gay. I firmly believe people are born that way and it shouldn't be an issue at all!)But I can honestly say I have no desire to ever see this! In the movie house, at home or on TV! No desire and when we saw it this time at the movie store I said those exact words! Gee does that make me anti CHristian? It just isn't something I want to visually see!
I think the problem I have is the double standards. because this movie is about 2 gay men and I speak to my husband or he to me in a video store out loud God forbid He/I say no way! or I have no desire to see that at all, then he/I horrible? See that is how it sounds when I read these post. That my husband has issues with his man hood. And who knows what You all think of me!
People talk to the person they came in with about movies. Many times I have had to talk my husband into getting something. Or he has talked me out of renting something.
So what if people are uncomfortable or sound like jerks. Does it really matter?
Movies are made to entertain. Not every movie will everyone find entertaining.
I just totally can't deal with any type of stero typing...which I am sorry but many of you are doing to us non Boke Back mountain fans.
So just so I understand when I go into the video rental I:
1. Do not voice an opinion about any movie in a negative light because that has to be wrong and I am not giving it a fair chance.
2. Don't speak to the sale associate or joke the movie isn't for me...
3. Decide before hand what we want to watch so then we won't even have to speak to each other...
heck sounds like a blast at the video store!

The resounding theme is that men need to 'get over it', I am simply asking why? the man in the OP DID say just no (any married woman knows that 'um, I dunno, can we look around some more'...equals NO), it wasn't left at just that, he was pressed to make an excuse. I am asking why does he need one?

I read the short story it is based on over Easter break. Cryed my eyes out...........it is so sad.

It is on my Netflix list, and DH will watch it.

Oh no! That's hilarous!

A number of my pers said it was "graphic" too. I really didn't find it graphic at all. I had read the New Yorker article before seeing it and thought that was far more so. I thought the movie did an incredibly good job capturing a wide angle of the emotions and social restrictions.

BBM is a movie. Seeing it or not seeing it, liking it or not liking it, is not an indication of a person's political or social views. I saw it and thought that it was the one of the best movies ever. A couple of my gay friends saw it and thought that it was slow and boring. Like any film, it will have its supporters and detractors. I certainly do not think that there should be a BBM litmus test for how comfortable people are with gay men.

I was the same way. I read it before going to bed and DH had fallen asleep while I read it. I finished it, put it on my bedside table, put the light off, and just started balling.

But I think part of that hem and haw is because people are making such a big deal about people's motivations. I am sure some of it is what has been brought up here....and some is exactly the kind of scrutiny that Poohandwendy is talking about. Some feel they need an excuse so as not to come across as homophobic because if they don't present one then they are automatically labled. I myself have no need to waste my time on it just as I didn't on Legends of the Fall, Cold Mt, etc.

And about that double standard involving Lesbians...not to be too graphic here but two girls going at it excites most guys on a sexual level....whereas two guys going at it does nothing in that particular catagory for the vast majority of men. You take the woman or women out of the equation and it just does nothing for most of us.

Another thank you! I am glad some poeple are understanding my meaning, LOL. I think many people are feeling put on the spot with this because it has been used as a gauge of whether someone is sexually uptight and/or homophobic.

I have a dear cousin (who I see most weeks) who is gay. I think his SO is a great guy and they come to visit us at our home. My cousin saw it and liked it, his SO refused to see it. He likes comedies like I do.
