men birkenstocks and dinner

My husband can't believe that he can't wear his birkenstock to dinner. I told him I would double check but I thought guys couldn't wear sandals to dinner. He was hoping to wear them with pants. Would really appreaciate peoples input as we are currently debating this.

IMHO, sandals on men are only acceptable when currently on the beach.

My DH lives in his sandals. When I say lives in them, I mean it. We live outside of Washington, DC and it is so cold outside. The only change he has made is that he is now wearing socks with them. OMGoodness! He wore them every place except Palo when we took our 4 day cruise.

The only thing that bugs me about men wearing sandals, especially to dinner is if they have nasty unmanicured feet! Clean'em up to make sure anyone glancin at the ground doesn't lose their dinner looking at your tootsies.

My DH wore dress sandals to both the regular dining rooms and to Palo and no one ever said a word nor would I expect them to. Yes, he did have a pedi prior to the trip and they are more closed than open as well. I wore Birks myself every night as well - didn't take any other kind of shoe actually. We also saw quite a few pairs of crocs.

If it is OK for a woman to where sandals or open toe shoes why can't a man do the same. If a man can't then the woman should not.

My DH & DS both wear nice leather sandals on the "cruise casual" nights. They would not wear flip flops or Crocs in the dining rooms nor would they wear them on formal or semi-formal nights or to Palo - they just don't go with suits or tuxes. I see nothing wrong with nice sandals on the less formal nights where they're not wearing dress shirts & ties. I think they actually look better with the Tommy Bahama look that most men have on the casual nights.
