I am looking at buying a digital camera for my trip to WDW :cool1: I am trying to decide between Nikon Coolpix 4600 or Sony DSC S60 I am leaning more toward the Sony. My question is are memory sticks more expensive than memory cards? Is there a difference as far as quality etc...

Thanks

Its the same thing, just different terms. Sony calls their memory "sticks" while Nikon calls their memory "cards". The only thing is that Nikon and Sony use different type of cards, so if you get a Sony camera you must purchase sony memory sticks and vice versa. Pricing is pretty much the same whichever you decide as they want to stay competitive and get your business. The more memory, the more expensive; but the more memory, the more pictures (and better quality pictures) you can store. I personally use everything Sony and have never had a problem with it. Just my personal opinion.

You should find that all of the various types of memory are pretty close in price. There is no difference in the cards other than their size. While some will claim faster transfer times and are easier on the batteries, I have found this to either not be true or not be enough of a difference to be a decision breaker. I worked in electronic retail up until last Christmas. I'd go for the one that feels the best in your hands and the one that has the best optical zoom (digital tends to only blur the pictures). Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions & I can also give you links to in depth reviews of the cameras.

I just bought a new Canon PowerShot A510 at Target. The only memory card I have is the one that came with the camera and if I remember right, the sales person said it wouldn't hold many pictures. Will I need to buy extra memory cards? What size do you recommend? I want to take at least 200 pictures at WDW while we're there. I don't have a laptop to download them onto. Thanks for any help you can provide an illiterate digital camera beginner.

We just switched from an older Sony CyberShot DSC-S30 to a new Kodak EasyShare DX6490. The Sony used memory sticks while the Kodak uses memory cards. You can find a memory card (or stick) now as large as 1GB of memory for less than $100. Possibly cheaper with sales and/or rebates. That should be enough memory to hold 200 high res pics for your Disney trip.

You can also buy two or more smaller cards and switch them out when they fill up. I know we like to keep two memory cards (or sticks, as it were) so we will never be without some sort of backup. My DH used his Sony Clio for storing the pics off of our memory sticks at the end of each day of our vacation.

Good luck with your new purchase(s)! Enjoy!

For my digital camera I have 2 512 mg cards. I looked up on Ritz Camera and they have for $89.99 BigPrint - 512 MB High-Speed Secure Disk Memory Card

I would also make sure that you get the high speed card, it will have as little lag between pictures as possible. My old digital took about 5 to 10 seconds between pictures and I lost so many good shots that way.

Good luck!

Before you buy your memory cards check to see what the largest size your camera can use.

Mava, i can pass along a secret, all of your questions will probably be answered by reading the manual that came with the camera,, as for memory cards, the bigger the better,, get at least a 500 meg memory card, which off the top of my head will cost about 50 bucks. this should get you at least 200 pics, probably more,,, watch the sunday papers and look at circulars from the different places like BEST BUY, CIRCUIT CITY,, those types of stores,, WALLYWORLD sells them in this area so i assume you can get them in your area WALMART to . have fun with your new camera.

 Have no experience w/ the Nikon.... but love my Sony!!! (Just bought my 2nd, because someone else loved my Sony, too- and STOLE it!) It all worked out, because I got an upgraded model on clearance!!!

I have a Sony DCS-P10. Great camera, small profile. It uses Memory Stick &/or Memory Stick Pro.

Regardless of the media type used by the camera you ultimately choose, rest assured that you can go to the nearest Walgreens, Wal-mart and, yes, the Exposition Hall (Kodak Camera Center) on Main Street U.S.A. and transfer you digital pictures from you storage media to CD.

Once your pictures are copied to CD, you can erase the media and start over. I took 466 pictures are 27 movies.

I took my own laptop and downloaded the pics from my camera to the computer each night, erased the pics from the Memory Stick and was ready to go the next day.

Main thing is to look at the features. Also, think about whether you want to be able to use regular batteries or a battery that has to be charged. A dead battery means no pictures until you can replace it or recharge it.

Here's what I found on the A510!

The Powershot A510 is equipped with a Secure Digital card slot and comes with a Canon 16MB MMC card. It can handle any capacity SD or MMC card.

From what the chart listed you would fit 295 pics on a 512mb card at the largest JPEG setting and on superfine for quality.....you'll get 1041 on the normal setting largest size.....here is a link to the whole chart if you want to see it. Steve's digicams

Seems like a 512 would be good, but since it can handle any capacity, I would personally go for a 1gb. Especially since you don't have a lap top to take with you. You will be surprised how fast you can snap off 200 pics when it isn't costing you fim. Or maybe pick up 2 512's......look at the high speed cards too. I find Newegg.com to have the best prices around on memory. Here are search results for 512mb SD cards from their site...you can search 1gb prices if you want to go that route. I have a 1gb Kingmax highspeed SD card that I've been very happy with! 512mb cards at newegg

I just purchased a Sony Cybershot p200........I found that memory sticks are a bit pricier than SD......especially Sony brand. San disk memory sticks are a little cheaper. My highspeed 1gb SD was $80 and I just paid $144 for a high speed 1gb Sony MS Pro........so that is quite a price difference. Of course, you can get non highspeed cheaper. DH's work will reimburse him since he got the camera to use at work so I wasn't real particular about the money. I would of found a cheaper memory stick probably not highspeed if I had been buying on my dime. I just wanted to say that YES, there is a price difference with the memory sticks.
As far as quality compares, I have no idea!
