Ok I am new to this board so please forgive me if this has been asked. Do I need to worry about my memory card getting erased going through the detectors at the airport?? I just bought an 8GB SanDisk Ultra II card for our upcoming trip. So almost all,if not all, of our pics will be on that one card. We also have another SanDisk 2GB card. Has anyone had any problems at the airport or with this Ultra II card in general?? My dh does have a laptop for work we could bring, but we really don't want to lug it down to FL. We will be travelling with 2 kids, so we will have plenty of stuff as is.

Any advice??

Thanks,

Kate

Your cards are not in any danger from the scanning equipment at the airport. However having said that, your still taking a large risk with your memories by having all your pictures on a single card with no back up stratagy.

I always take my laptop and download them to the computer and then burn disks.

If you must use only cards your better off to have 4 or 5 2gb cards so your not going to lose all of your pictures in the case of a failure.

Memory cards are so cheap now that I use them for backups on trips. I used to burn DVD's each night. Now, I just keep an extra 16gig card and dump photos onto that. Between the laptop hard drive and the memory card, I figure that's good enough. With some deleting, I found that 2 16 gig cards was enough to get me through a week of shooting. YMMV.

Good ideas, but now dh tells me he doesn't want to take the laptop because it really belongs to work (it isn't ours) and he doesn't want to have to worry about it. So what are our other options? We won't have a car either. I am open to purchasing some kind of backup device ie Epson P-2000 etc, but I don't want to spend a lot of $$ (under $150 would be good). Are there CD or DVD burning kiosks on property? are they any good? If not is there a place close by the Beach Club (take a taxi) where we could burn a DVD without the photos being compressed? Our camera is a Nikon D80.

Thanks,

Kate

Do you own an Ipod? If so, you can buy an adapter that will let you download photos to it. I use mine like that a lot. The photo shops will burn to CDs/DVDs but I think it is pretty pricey. You might find an old refurbished P-2000 for your price but the newer model P-3000 will run about $260 to $300 after rebates. There are other cheaper ones - go here:

My dh owns an 8GB iTouch. He just got it a month or so ago. Can we get an adapter and download to this?? That would be awesome.

Sharon can you share the details of how this works and what adapter we would need?

Thanks,

Kate

Sorry - it doesn't work with the itouch; only color ipods and video ipods. Also, his 8 gigs is probably mostly taken up with music and other things. But, the adapter for those is $29 so if you know someone with an older ipod, maybe you can borrow theirs.

Well its costly but if you are worried go to Walgreens before you go home and have them put to disc.

I think they will be fine.

Now I need to start stocking up memory cards for my next trip. I got a 2G extreme III with my new camera but that won't be enough I'm sure. ;)

Myself I'll have access to a computer to save them to and probably will so that my dad has copies so I would have backups that way.

I believe that I read on these boards that there is a place in the MK that transfers to disc for you. I can't remember exactly where it is.

Another option is to check to see if there is another DISer with a laptop that will burn a few disks for you.

I would gladly do that, if you give me a night, any time.

Mark...are you talking about dumping your pics on a flash drive or another CF/SC card. If it is a CF/SD card, how do you transfer pics from card to card? Is it as easy as just transfering through your computer similar to if it is a flash drive?
