Memory Card for Nikon D40

My niece, age 17 is seriously into photography and has the expensive camera with all the bells and whistles.

She recently lost her "big" memory card. Don't know how big and don't want ot ask and give away my potential gift idea.

I want to get her a "big" and "fast" memory card for her Nikon D40. What do I want to buy? Is there a specialty item of some sort I should look at or just any random SD card? How big should I go?

Any input would be appreciated. I'd love other ideas to go with this that are not budget busters, smallish items that are camera related.

I have the Nikon D40, it is a great camera! What you want to look for would be an SCHC type card. I believe the one i have is a 4GB and it holds alot. The extreme card saves the picture quicker. You could go onto Best Buy's website and search for SanDisk HC Extreme and you should find what you are looking for.

Does she want a big one? When I was at the photo store yesterday they told me that they always recommend a couple of smaller ones rather than one large one because they can get lost, as she has already done.

I have a 4GB and I find it to be plenty although I may get a 2nd.

Ya know I don't think you can go over 4gbs on the D40. She doesn't want to put all her eggs in one basket anyway so maybe two 4gb cards she can switch out? They're super cheap anymore and with Black Friday around the corner memory will be rock bottom. I prefer the Extreme III cards.

Ya know I don't think you can go over 4gbs on the D40.

I just checked the D40 Manual (page 102) and it only shows cards up to 4gb.

I agree that it is better to have 2 2GB cards instead of 1 4GB or 4 1GB cards. I could figure out a way to deal with a loss or corruption of 1 card, but not an entire trip.

That is incorrect, I am currently using a Kingston 8gb SDHC card in my D40. I know people who have used 16gb, but I don't not have one to try. 4gb may have been the largest available when the D40 was released (2006?).

Ummm, wouldn't you be more likely to lose one swapping them out? I'm not necessarily advocating putting all your eggs in one basket, but if your main worry is losing the card, it would seem that one large one that never leaves the camera would be less likely to get lost.

I also use an 8gb for my D40. These cards do have a shelf life. They sometimes can also get corrupted. It is better to have at least 2 cards for this reason alone. Also if you are out shooting and 1 card gets full (it has happened to me), you have the second to put in.

We were at Universal and I forgot to reformat the card after downloading the pictures from the previous day to my laptop. Halfway through the day the card filled up. I had to delete picture one by one to free up space. Now I always have at least one empty card as a spare with me.

Pelican is a nice brand, the case definitely looks sturdy and safe. That being said, I personally wouldn't buy it. I just looked at the same case and decided against it because of the fact that I like to keep my cards in the little plasic case that they came in.

I ended up buying two of the ones I linked to below. They're a soft case that closes with velcro, but because it is made to hold CF cards rather than SD, there is plenty of room for the SD card with plastic casing to fit into each slot.

I also have a D40.I use this case and love it,I also use extereme III cards 4gb.This case has been dropped, been in heavy rain and still works perfect.If I just carry one card I use the little plastic case it comes with.Good Luck

Don't forget about card speed. The SDHC cards are rated 2,4,6,10, with 10 being the highest speed. I just recently purchased two Sandisk 8gb class 10 cards for 49.95 each from Newegg.com. The class 10 was just released by Sandisk. Previously I had been using class 6 cards on my Pentax K10d's.
