Memorizing Maps- mainly 50 States

DS9 learned the states and capitals last summer for fun. A few dumb tricks we did - and you have to use your imagination for it to work...
Helena, Montana - he imagined the edge of Montana as being Helen's face - from The Incredibles - she was the stretch lady so her head is stretched back (I told you...you gotta use your imagination!)
Louisiana is shaped like an L; Oklahoma is a big pot, cooking okra. He knew California and Washington but for Salem, Oregon, he thought of M & M sailing in the Pacific Ocean using Ores. He mostly did this to learn the capitals rather than the states. Vermont is shaped like a V. He could usually remember where the states are. If I think of more he used, I'll post them.

Yes, that is how I learned and then taught to my children, funny the stuff you remember many years later! Then when it came time to mapping, they knew the states and it was easier not to forget any!

I started with the west coast and said them out loud like this and kept repeating them in like a jingle

Washington Oregon California
Washington Oregon California Idaho
Washington Oregon California Idaho Nevada
Washington Oregon California Idaho Nevada Utah

Thank you all so much for your replies. We tackled the US states in sections. First she placed the East Coast states (where we live) and then went clockwise around. The middle states were memorized in sections as well. (Mainly determined by where the state fell on which side of the Mississippi river) She said she forgot 4 states, and mixed up Delaware and Maryland. I really hope this is a passing grade. Those websites helped too for last minute review!
